Plea for more Darjeeling autonomy

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4217113.stm The leader of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council has met India's home secretary to press its case for more autonomy in Darjeeling. Council leader Subhas Ghising asked Dhriendra Singh for more power to control "terrorist organisations" in the north-east tea-producing region. In a letter to the premier in October, Mr Ghising said such organisations were using Darjeeling as a base. Mr Ghising also called for a probe into the murder of three council members. Indian officials agreed to investigate the killings, which took place between 1999 and 2003, but did not respond to other demands.
