Are multivitamin supplement good for health

I take B12, D3 and some supplements like 'Ashwagandha' from Costco I think. I take another too for hair and nails, I forgot the name now. B12, D3 were recommended by my physician to take daily..I didn't like this idea of ingesting pills daily but then do I have a choice now?
I can understand taking vitamin D especially in place like Boston, or whole east coast because like I said before the weather here is treacherous here for 8-9 months with only 2-3 months of pleasant summer, so naturally we do not get enough sun. And with most of the people working from home and with all these technology fads engulfing our social lives, people here hardly get out of their houses. Not all though, people who are running fanatics or who have pets, or who are addicted to lottery tickets, cigarettes and what nots, they do get out very often. I belong to the first category so I can understand I am not getting enough vitamin D and it is almost impossible to go out and bask in the sun even if it is out because of the wind.
