Imagine a society where normal visible light in homes and offices could connect you to the internet. Where light becomes data. Normal everyday light. Allowing a person to access more than 10 Gigabytes per second of internet bandwidth. Now if that doesn’t sound like an utopia of internet connectivity, then read further.

LiFi is a way of accessing the internet, which uses the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, infra-red and ultra-violet rays. Whereas Wi-Fi achieves internet connectivity using radio frequencies, LiFi achieves this using the visible light spectrum which can enable unprecedented data and bandwidth.

The EM spectrum
Current devices like smart phones, computers, televisions, speakers, headphones, printer’s, VR goggles and even refrigerators use wireless data to connect and perform essential communications. But that’s not the limit. In fact, it is predicted that by the year 2020 there will be 20 billion devices wirelessly connecting to the internet, increasing the scope of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Most internet bandwidth is used for video streaming, like Netflix, social media or Virtual Reality (VR). Radio frequency technology like Wi-Fi is running out of spectrum to support this digital revolution and LiFi can help power the next generation of immersive connectivity.

Technology
LiFi is a category of Optical Wireless Communications (OWC). It also falls under Visible Light Communication (VLC). VLC works by switching the current to the LEDs on and off at a very high rate, too quick to be noticed by the human eye. Although Li-Fi LEDs would have to be kept on to transmit data, they could be dimmed to below human visibility while still emitting enough light to carry data. OWC includes infra-red and ultra-violet communications as well as visible light. However, LiFi allows the scenario where light used for communication is also used for illumination.
