i was watching the movie basanti and came to a scene where the queen says 'gagan singh is a good contender but he is a khawas'. what does that mean?what is khawas?

Khawas can be Magar and Tharu. In that context, Gagan Singh Khawas was a Magar.

Khawas is one of the Tarai residence but we need to find out was there any position or work type in that era. Many work type picked up as their cast. Katwal may be from Kotawal .
