Protect yourself from scams
- Entering the lottery is free. Anyone who asks you to pay to enter is not the government.
- The only official website is dvprogram.state.gov. Be careful with look-alike websites, ads and social media pages.
- Nobody can improve your chances or guarantee that you will be selected.
- You check your own result on the official site with your confirmation number. Treat any email, text or call saying you were selected as a scam until you have checked there yourself.
- Keep your confirmation number private. Never post it, your passport details or photos of your documents on Sajha or on social media.
- If someone helps you fill in the form, make sure the entry is in your name, with an email address you can open, and that you keep the confirmation number yourself.
- If you were scammed in the United States, you can report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
The steps, in plain words
- Read the official instructions first. They are different every year, so do not rely on last year's rules.
- Check that you can enter: your country of birth must be on that year's list, and you need the education or work experience the official instructions describe.
- Get your details ready: your passport, the details of your spouse and unmarried children under 21, an email address you can open, and a photo that meets the official photo requirements.
- Fill in the form only on the official site. Send one entry for yourself - more than one can cancel all of them.
- Save your confirmation number straight away and keep it private. You need it to check your result.
- When results are announced, check the official site yourself. Being selected is only the first step - there are more steps, and the official instructions say what you pay and to whom.
The photo rules are strict, and a wrong photo can cancel an entry. Follow the official photo requirements exactly.
