They won't care. Just make sure that they're large bills to ensure that the volume is small. People have carried a strap of 100s (10k) w/ limited ease.

They'll have you go through a scanner that won't detect anything.

Yup, no one cares...5K is ok!!!
FYI..
->After you land in KTM airport, there are free local phone service located inside the terminal before you reach baggage claim. Just incase, if you want to inform your family/friends that you arrived. Since baggage claim will take anywhere between 30-45 mins.

->There are lots of free trolley around the corner of Baggage Claim. :)

->If you are using ATM service in Nepal, i recommend Himalayan Bank in Bishal Bazar. It let me withdraw NRS. 30,000 per transaction (Every ATM charges RS.400 per transaction but max withdrawal amount varies)

Enjoy your Trip!!!

TIA officials tend to be lenient towards returnees from N. America, Europe, Australia etc. You shouldn't have any problems whatsoever.

We landed at around midnight during my last trip. Since ours was the last flight of the day, idiots didn't even bother to have us go through scanner and all that. That was a bit weird but not really shocking.

under 10k is not a problem. do yourself a favor and make sure they are denominated in 100 dollar bills. you will get more while converting to rupees.

Its one thing to rely on inefficiency of the system and another to try to fix it. I think we should ask for the per person limit to be raised at TIA.
