You know, if we could *somehow* get a subway system implemented, it would be our first step towards picking ourselves up!
But I'm not sure if we can dig below Kathmandu because of the gap left by the vanishing water level. However, I'm no geologist, so if one could come to clarify, much would be appreciated.
The valley is home to around 5 million people, according to
Wikipedia at least. That is almost half the size of NYC (~12 Mil). If the maoists promise not to blow up the support tunnels, a subway system would be beneficial for at least another century or two. (just to let it sink in 1 century = 100 years)
We are already at a slight disadvantage being landlocked, even more so between two huge fat economies like India and China that donot leave a lot of crumbs for us to feed ourselves. But that's not going to change since we can really take over any of them (hehe!). So we have to make use of whatever we have to propel ourselves. Plus who knows, with all that digging, we might strike luck on minerals buried underneath? Imagine us sitting on a mountain of uranium? Well not uranium as we'd prolly get killed in the ensuing struggle between India/China to claim it. (If you find uranium, shhhh).
A metro system below the city, and while we're working on digging and building, a railroad system to connect all of Nepal. The Indians are already trying to fk us in the ass by extending their lines till Lumbini, so now is the time to UNITE, MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS. Quit the petty disputes and lets fking do something productive, even if we are 1000s of miles away from home, we can help with money and thoughts and advice.
I think the road to progress lies in opening up people's minds and showing them that sometimes sacrificing for the good of the country is beneficial to self-interest too! It's a very easy target to miss tho, so don't know how many will buy it. However, if we could just get rid of that criticizing, damaging "Nepali buddhi", that would be a wonderful start.
A visual marker you can use to gauge (very very roughly) at what level we stand in terms of open-minded ness - take 5 of your closest nepali friends/family, play out a controversial situation in your head. When your expectation of how they would react change, then we're moving forward. Or even better, ask that question here in Sajha and watch the fireworks (trolling potential).
