Monsoon Madness

Finally, the monsoon has entered Nepal, and we will be seeing heavy rain for a few days from tomorrow and more for the next few months. Let us hope that our man Sudan and his Home Ministry wallahs are better prepared to handle the landslides, floods, and bus accidents across the country during this monsoon season.

The APF has thousands of its personnel on standby, and it's a good thing that this government wants to prevent and minimize bus accidents and loss of life during the monsoon, unlike in the past when Oli Ba told us that he did not bring the rain and had no say on floods, landslides, and bus accidents in this country during the monsoon.

Yes, he was right. He is not God but it was his job as the PM then to at least work towards minimizing the loss of life and property. But I guess he had better things to do like working on his ukhaan-tukka and hawatari speeches!

I agree with the government's decision to ban travel on certain highways during heavy rain. It is better to stay home and be safe than take risks with your life in such weather conditions. I think we need some foreign help in terms of technical knowledge when it comes to preventing or minimizing landslides in our hilly regions. We are just not getting it right when it comes to building walls or some kind of control to minimize the landslides.

We cannot fight nature, but we can at least prepare for the worst and provide relief in a more efficient manner. Not much has changed in the past three decades. A 13-year old raising funds for flood victims in the 90s is now a 50-year old, father of three, and still raising funds for those affected by the monsoon in 2026!

We can no longer keep on blaming the Congress UML Maoist (CUM) mili-juli loot goverments of the past. It will be similar to these old school netas blaming the House of Shah, the Panchayati system, and even the Rana regime for all the mess in this country while forgetting that they were the ones who had the opportunity to change this country for good in the past three decades.

This monsoon will be a big test for this new government. The interim government before the election did a pretty decent job of managing the risks and preventing many bus accidents by shutting down highways during heavy rain last year.

Sudan Gurung has his own experiences in disaster relief, and for once, we have a Home Minister who will be hands-on and work hard to minimize the loss of lives and homes during this monsoon.

My advice to all is to check the weather report daily and weekly as well if you are traveling by road this monsoon. It is also our responsibility to make sure we are not booking tickets from Kathmandu to Kakarvitta on some Thursday when there is 90% chance of heavy rain.

If you live less than 500 meters from river banks, then please make sure to take care of yourself when heavy rain hits your roof. We cannot blame the government for everything when we know very well that some of us are the ones who have decided to play with nature and think they will get away with it by building homes or living in flood-prone areas.

So, buy some umbrella, raincoat, and even gumboots if you haven't done so yet. It is better to be prepared rather than get wet in the middle of the afternoon and curse the Gods and blame the government for getting your underwear soaked wet and you can't go home till 5pm! We can tolerate the heat but a wet buttocks is pure torture!
