Having faith in something is totally different than being religious. When talkin about religion and people going to hear lecture from these sadhus and acharyas, I feel one cunning blind is leading some dumb blinds.

nut, there is a typo. it wasn't christianity that evolved from islam and judaism. it was judaism(in the BCs) -> Christianity(1st Century AD) -> Islam (7th Century AD).

The concept of advaita vedanata (non-dualism) came much later when indian subcontinent was attaked by the muslims and threatened the end of hindu rulers there aound the end of 1st millenium (9th century, i think). hindus just had too many gods, especially corrupted by the priests who emphasized pleasing gods of all kinds. Then Guru Sankaracharya, a vaishnava propounded advaita vedanta when he said, although there are atma(s) and so many forces of nature, they are infact the absolute himself functioning simulataneouly with eachother in many forms.

The doctrine is based on three truths;
1. Supreme Brahman is the only reality - Transcendental level - Parmathika
2. Jiva (livings) and Iswar (gods) are all reaility - pragmatic livel - Vyabhaharika
3. Material world is also a reality - apparent level - pratibhasika

However, the Supreme Brahman has completely control of all the truths with a special tool he posses - Maya or Illusion. He created Maya to hide from the real truth of understanding so, that human minds can only find the Supreme Brahman with spirituality, not materialistically which he called Moksha (Salvation). And there are four ways to achieve it - Bhakti, Karma, Gyana and Raja.

Thanks for the correction Sujanksji!

My thought while writing "considering Buddhism evolved from Hinduism and Christianity from Muslim and Judaism" was to emphasize that Hinduism and Muslim religions incorporate or provide foundations/fundamentals for all major religions of the present era. However, chronologically, you are absolutely right.

I think "religion" makes people blind, "spirituality" awakens. What are your views?

In response to the original Posting:

Let me answer the first question of your.

Everything depends on people. If people have crap in their mind, they will project crap to the society. Since violence causes the crap let me expalin whether a faith is solely resposible for the violence.

If majority of people are violent loving, there will be violent in the society. The cause of violence could be anything, faith, politics, business whatever.

Mainly injustice brings the violence and that very injustice is a relative term depends on the observer/perceiver. Justice for one may not be the justice of other, they can't convince each other and conflict bigins. Two brothers and sisters fight with each other, they don't need religion as a cause. One couldn't find another justifying that's why they are fighting. Two families are quarriling because they couldn't find each other right. From person to family, family to ethnic group, ethnic group to country, country to continent, the conflict advances.

When two people quarrel, the damage is small. When two families quarrels, the damage get bigger. This way person to family to ethnic group to country to continent, the intensity of damage increases...... big to bigger to biggest. Quarrel turns to war and war to world war.

War is a bigger quarrel which includes many violent loving people. And cause of that could be anything, not necessarily a faith. Apparent cause of WWII was religion not that of WWI. Even in world war II, the main war was between the people of same faith. Was faith a cause of Civil war of United States? Killing of fellow Russians by Stalin? Killing of fellow Buddhist (Chinese) by Japanese? Cold war between two fello christian superpowers after WWII? Killing of fellow Hindus by Ashoka? France-England war? Iran-Iraq war? Hindu India dominating fellow Hindu Nepal? You name it.

Regarding the existing wars in the world as well, we can't blame on religion only. War in our country, between Moists and the government doesn't have any faith as a cause. If you say US/Iraq war as religious, what will you say to Iriqi governemt verses extremist muslims? What will you say to Pakistan and Afganstan vs Al Quida? If you consider Israeli-Palistanian war as religious, what will you say to Northern Irelend conflict?

Belive me or not violence starts when you close your mind. If you use your intellect and understand the problem wholestically, there will be no room for violence. I may think differently than you think. If both of us are fool we will begin conflict; I will say I am right and you are wrong and you will say vise-a-versa. If one of us is wise, ie, knows the problem wholestically then we will be able to convince another. After all the next person is also a human being with intellect. He/she mightnot think rationally due to limited knowledge but can understand if someone explains logically.

If you blindly support yourself, don't use your wisdom, don't try to underderstand the situation wholestically, there will always be conflict in your life. Any war, which has/had faith as its cause, is due to those people who don't know what their religion is but they blindly support themselves, their ideas and their values. These people, who fought for faith yesterday, are fighting for politics today, and will be fighting for power tomorrow. Afganis fought among themselves for power, then they fought against Russia for faith, and again fought among themselves for power. Isn't this a good example?

So my friend, crap is not a faith but crap is in the mind of the people. If you fight for wealth with your sister/brother, the wealth is not a crap; either you are a crap or your sibling is a crap or both of you are crap.

For the crap you need to be blind. A blind is blind for everything not only for faith.

Madhu Ji, it depends how you define these two words, "religion" and "sprituality". If you say religion as a group of people who believes in a particular philosophy, who practices particular types of rights and rituals, who celibrates a particular types of fastes and festivals and sprituality as a wholsome practice to purify physical, vocal and mental actions of an individual, then of course you are right.

If you define "religion" as a blind faith and "sprituality" as a wit, awareness, or implimentation of wisdom; then you are right.

Nothing makes you blind, blind is blind. If you don't use your intellect, don't think of the outcome of your actions, donn't analize what is right and what is wrong, don't use your wisdom, you are blind. One the other hand, if you are aware of the outcome of your actions and perform the right action, you know what is right and what is wrong and follow the right, you properly analyse the problem and get right solution through your wisdom, then you are awakened. Religion has nothing to do with "blind" and "awaken" because in every religion there exists most blind least awakened people.

First of all, I am not trying to say that my perception of why there is so much conflict in the world today is right. It's just that to my eyes, today it all boils down to religion/faith today. Let's not talk about WWII or the holocaust or anything like that, 'coz we've been reading like hell about why these things happened why they were necessary/unncessary, they've been anylyzed over and over again and i think we can pretty much make sense of those things. The issue was mainly does your faith/religion have anything to do with what's going on? When Jihad was declared, was the religious motive necessary?? and is that enough? Are the Mulsims fighting Hindus in everyday life as we can see ourselves just becaue they belive in different GODS? If so wudn't it be better if there was only one religion? Sunnis and Shiite what's up with them? it all seems crazy n' the solution cud be one religion but it's not.. So what is it that keeps us tied to our faith sometime beyond rationality.. not that GOD/spirituality belong to the rational world .... why do i think that depite all the superstitions we are born into, I still respect and love my religion?? Even though our religion obviously disparages women in a million way, I still like to belive that it's chaging and it's good for me??? is it arrogance or do I have a blind, blind faith??
(I am not trying to use religion and faith synonymously, they are different; faith is what every religion is based on, it's sth u can have without having to acknowledge "GOD" and all of us might have our own little definitions it doesn't matter--- we understand what I mean)
I don't know.. i am just taking out what on my mind n' heart and trying to understand 'coz in a way it's very important to me, i dont' wanna die without knowing anything... Also, if god and religion are so unreal and made up just for our own purposes why is it still there? why still so strong? Why didn't it fade out as so many other things during our civilization? JUst a thought.

the way that i try to make myself understand that ascpect is by accepting that everything we believe and understand are done by five and only five ways. We hear, see, smell, taste and touch. those are only way we input information. now there is something called brain that processes well, ofcourse with the use of hormones and chemicals. then it is output in the form of anger, sadness, joy and happiness. just small example. i was watching the rose bowl and half of them were extremely happy and the other half were extremely said.

it is all about how it is going to be processed. whether correct or incorrect, only your body determines, no one else can, neither anybody's body or brain. it may help and provide catalystic assistance, however cannot help you conclude absolutely if it is correct. such as, the best way to completely satisfy your sexual hunger is by making love to someone, and the best way to completely satisfy to regular hunger is by eating some food.

now that said, doesn't mean you'd just sleep with anyone or eat anything. you have likes and dislikes. someone likes the rani mukherjee, and others like angelina jolie or both. someone likes to eat zuchuni and someone likes egg plant, or both. like one, dislike other or disklike or like both. it just depends on how your body want to accept any form of physical, mental or spiritual information input in. another thing, if you think something is borthering you, you seem to get rid of it. be it something in the house, car or computer, life anything. same thing with the world in any case. mujaheedins hated the russians, and drove them out recalling 'jihad', and thinking the americans betray them, declared 'jihad' against once upon a time friend. Saddam used to be a great ally, now he is biggest enemy. it's like, people used to walk in beginning, then started to ride horse, then drew carriage, then automobiles and now they are flying. anyhow, they haven't stopped walking or riding horses. it is all about evolution of human mind and body.

i think we should just learn to give love because, we know the feeling of someone hating or dislikign us, so why give the same back to them. if we can't stop disliking then, perhaps just ignore. living alone as-is is better than damaging, unless you want to fix something. however, all these could be interpreted in anyways, anyone wants. there could 6.5 billions thoughts regarding the same thing. just like the elephant to the blind men. it's a fan, it's a pillar, it's a whip etc. etc...

No One Ji, I have just given my views. They could be well analized and justified. I appologize if any of my words has disheartened you. Didn't mean it. The way I write is always confusing :), bad me. The word "you" , which I use, is general, not particularly for you (no one). Sorry for that.

These are really wonderful questions. I will love to try to answer them if you really mean it.

Good thought, good start. Thoughts themselves are not powerful they need to be transformed into action to get something tengible, perceivable. Make your thought as a quest, and do some research, theoritical (books, friends, internet) and experimental (meditation). That's the right way to go. Good start, keep going and good luck.

MM Ji nice to see your posting. Hope you are doing well.

Sujanks Ji,

Do you think that is the right way to test validity of 330 million gods? You you think what you are doing is logical, I have nothing to say.

To me it occurs that there are better ways to examine this. Don't take otherwise, this is just a suggestion from a wellwisher.

1. You can look for the source that claimed to be 330 million gods. (Hint: You can find this in Puranas, so read them)

2. Find the authenticity of the person or entity who claim this.

3. Find the time range when he claim this.

4. Find the ground under which he claim this?

5. Analize the solidity of the ground.

6. Use your common sense and general sensual laws while analizing.

Then you might get something rational. I am positive you will get convincing answer of your question. You don't measure the diameter of the sun by measuring tape. There are better ways to do it.

If you could find the actual reality of 330 million gods, it will not only fulfill your intellectual quest but help society to come out of the blind faith. People are believing blindly that there are 330 million gods. Those, who belive so, don't even know who told it. This blind faith is killing us. We just accept things since we have been hearing from our childhood. Never try to find whether they are true or not. This has become our traditon. Gullible us!

We need people like you, who has quest to examine those rumers. Test them, if they are true, brought them up as a science. If they are false, leave them as ferry tales. Let's establish a scientific tradition. Faith is not bad itself, however, it has to be enlightened faith, not a blind faith. Lets leave the tradition of blind faith and lead a progressive life. You can help us.

Please find this out, if you could, you will be shining a ray of light to the world of those people who born, live, and die in darkness.
