Why we tend to overburden ourselves for education instead of taking student loan from Nepal like Indians?
Guys, this question has been hovering around since my college days and now professional life. We (Nepalese) and Indians all come to U.S for study and eventually to better our future getting a successful job. But We(Nepalese) think that we need to do everything on our own as soon as we land our feet in U.S.A and start working our a## to pay our tuition fee and expenses which obviously doesn’t work in most case. On the other hand, Indians either come here in full scholarship or pay their tuition fee by student loan from India. They don’t work off-campus during college and concentrate more time on studies and hence get better jobs after graduation.
To make it interesting, let’s make it a real scenario. A Nepalese and an Indian comes to U.S for under graduate college. Indian guy works on-campus and spends most of the time in studies while paying tuition by loan or either from scholarship until they graduate. However, A Nepali student wanders around multiple places for a job, goes to summer places and earns 5-10K per summer, changes multiple colleges and hardly finishes college in 6 years. However, Indian students graduate in 4 years or earlier. Consequence is that Indians lands job faster and pays all their debt faster whereas we Nepalese spent 2 more years working in fast food restaurant and finally finish up graduation with credit card debt. Now not only we have too much debt left in our credit cards, but we have lost 2 years of time which could have earned us $80,000 and more.
Although there are some 4.0 grader Nepalese who land pretty handsome jobs as soon as they graduate but majority of us end up joining masters or return to Nepal without being able to find a good job. Although I’m fortunate enough to get a job but in general, we are lacking way behind than Indians in terms of employment.
Stumbled with this question, I try to think lot of answers about it.
1.       Is it because we are poor and cannot afford to get a student loan?
2.       Is it the mentality that we have that has engulfed in our mind which teaches us to stay independent as possible?
3.       Is it the mentality that we have that we can’t ask money from our parents after landing overseas?
4.       Is it because of the seniors who sent home tons of money without spending more time in college and due to which, we are expected to do so as well?

Guys, although this is a rhetoric question and needs lot of critical thinking, please help me to find the right answer.
Healthy discussion is highly encouraged and appreciated.

Note: This doesn't apply to all the Indian and Nepalse students but more of the general.

Peace

Sirus is 100% right. Parents putting money in your childrens, who are in US are the best investment that you will do ever in entire life.
2 years in community college is not a bad idea. Then for your next 2 or 3 years, borrow $20,000, how much interest will you have to pay. Well answer is simple, at max 15%.
That is $3000 per year. But you still have summer and and minimum 20hr/week work would be sufficient to cover you interest. After you find job, which you will after good grade and college. It would be logical and samart decision to earn 45K per year.

That is what I am going to do.

I did not read any of the posts but here is what I experienced.

My only answer, NO STUDENT LOANS IN NEPAL as Indians get loan in india for higher studies.

As I studied, worked, gave GRE , applied for univ staying in India, and my preparation was similar to my Indian friends. For 2 years masters, they take 1 year's expenses as student loan and other year's expenses they show other business/properties etc.
They get student loan easily without intrest ( or may be very less interst ) of any amount. In 2006 people get 7 Lakh INR loan without any colateral.
So, first shocking thing as I came to nepal for visa was to know there is "no student loan". S**t...... Then I had to do what others did to work around with the loan and fees. Rest of stories you all know how it goes.

Other stories you know well.

If I had got student load, I would have taken and paid back just like my indian friends did, BS.

If there is possibility of getting student loan in nepal without colateral, without interest or with very less interest I'll be glad to know.

Few suggestions to you all students:

Pick a college that will give you instate tuition ( many state colleges in MN) or find ones who will give you scholarship. State Colleges in MN are still around $3000 per semester for tuition. Large state colleges also offer oppurtunites to work Part time in the college without the hassel of INS or authorities. You can earn about $500.00 per month working as a library helper, lab helper, security guard, Cafeteria boy or a resident supervisor. That should be enough for you to live a simple student life in a two bedroom apt with 4 roomates. Lets say that you did not work during the summer, you should be able to graduate with 15K for tuition. This amount here is pretty good compared to what colleges are charging back home. In another words, if you were back in Nepal, you parents would be spending this much to colleges anyways. But if you are lucky enough to work in the summer you should be able to save up 6K during the summer itself. Hence, you will breakeven with your studies throughout your undergrad.

The key thing that lacks YOU students is that, you do not know what your goal is. You have to know the purpose of your study. What do you want to get out of it. Do you want to go to college becasue you are passionate about some acemedia and you want to master it? Do yo u want to go to college because you are under pressure to get a college degree?? Do yo u it becasue everyone around you is wanting it? Or are you just attending college becasue you do not know anything else beside going to college?

Although, getting a student loand sounds good and all for some of your cases here, it may not sound as great for the ones who just want to get a degree of some sort and then get some sort of job based on that degree. If you are in the category of just getting a degree for the sake of getting it why get a loan and increase the risk on yourself and your parents. If your parents are taking a huge financial risk by investing 8K on you initial departure and that is all you can do....then not working while going to school is probably not an option for you. But if your parents are well off and can loan spend 40K on you and you have the ability and confidence in rebuilding on those reinvested 40K why not take the loan and get it done.

It would be little naive to compare the Indian Govt policies with ours. How many of think that it is quite easy for an Indian to get an education loan? Is our government as strong as the Indian government financially. Its probably not.

The major problem i see with most of the College Kids today is that they want to live an American life as soon as they land in this country. I cannot add up how it is possible to afford an iPhone, Car, booze, Ganja,  Girlfriend and working hard establishing the fact of living an Amercan life to folks back home without working 60 -70 hrs at a gas station. Now look back at your Indian and Chinese friend. Did they own a car? Did they have an iPhone and a girlfriend? Did they party as hard as you did? Ask yourself these questions.

So my suggestion to you all students is before you decide on the loan/no loan, work/no work, Good college/Mediocre College consider the combination of (Your Acedemic Status + your Family's Financial Status + The Lifestyle you want to live during your student life). Pick the scenerio that is most applicable to you. Once you determin your scenerio do not sway away from it until the goal is achieved.

Sidster above gave a really good advice to students. Finding one's objective is really important in deciding schools and place of study. It is not necessary to study in US to get good jobs in Nepal. Nevertheless, travelling and studying abroad could be a good experience for a lifetime. However it is not wiser to spend money on things that is not necessity and student loan is a huge burden in itself.
All the students abroad (Europe, North America and Australia) can achieve what they want with little or no help from parents. But sometimes it might be necessary to ask help from parents or get loans.
Few advice from my side (which might be redundant)

1) Choose school based on your objective and ambition. Small schools or state universities like in minnesota are small yet has accredition and quality. They have lower tuition rates and flat rates for 12-18 credits. There are tons of schools like these. Do the research.
2) Try to live according to your means. America is full of stuffs so beware of stuffs, if you start gathering you want stop.
3) In freshmen and junior year community colleges might be cheaper option but try to locate universities where you will land after that and and if courses get transferred.
4) Try to work in summer, use your network earn as much as possible. All are not lucky but don't stop trying.
5) Don't forget the internships, they are stairways to good job.
6) Don't bother much about money, money is needed and you knew that before starting to study. So try to plan your study according to it.

If applying all or part of these things you are not able to pay, transfer to cheaper universities, or hang on if you are only few semester short or ask parents and friends.
But don't ever be a fool and be in debt or leave your study.
I was a student and this helped me to get through........
