Sathi ho. I will be starting my first professional job soon. I don't know what to expect as I have only worked in gas stations and sandwhich stores. What are some of the work etiquette that I should know? Like how I should behave, what I should say. And should I bring my own luch or just eat out the first few days? What should I expect? Ekdamn nervous chu. Lack of confidence.

First of all, take it easy on yourself. It's not that bad and most will probably help you out.

Dress nicely, but don't overdress. Shirt and cotton/khaki pants with dress shoes should cover unless they require a tie.

Take lunch with you just in case; if they go out, go with them.

Introduce yourself to your group, if your supervisor hasn't done it already. I used to smile a lot when I was new, that's with most of us out here I guess. Smile, but not nervously.

You're going there to work, focus on that. Not what others will do or say.

Good luck for a long and fruitful career.

Regarding lunch , I would not suggest to  take momo, I had bad review because of it's srong smell after mirowave.

First couple of week, just listen to them, nod on what they say. Don't give or input your valuable suggestion, coz its always wrong when you are beginner.. Be punctual, and don't hesitate to ask your senior or collegues.. That's it else life jhinga la la

For couple of days pretend yourself that you know everything but dont be oversmart and never say I am sorry I am new and I dont know,Just say this is new environment for me and I can get along with new environmet soon.Dont be nervous, they not gonna make you do major duties or task for couple days.. Just try to learn more and more. go early and try to stay longer .Nepali guys always rocks at work . Make sure to note everything.

I wouldn't follow koho-koho suggestion about just nodding. If I were your supervisor and you only nod to what I say, I would have a poor first impression about yourself. Be proactive and initiate opportunities to learn stuff.

There is some truth to what gone12 said about pretending to self about knowing it all. Fake confidence can lead to right confidence; just be aware that you are there to soak in as much as you can so don't hesitate to ask and be adaptive.

Agree about momo advice (Gorkhe); anything that stinks (like indian curry and stuff) is a nono. Just take a simple plain sandwich as a backup incase your group doesn't eat out.

My suggestion is to ask a lot of questions. No question is dumb question and especially it makes sense if you are new. whenever you are in a meeting - ask a lot of question based on the topic. In the corporate rate - you can be noticed more by how and what you speak and not what you actually do.

Some personal stuffs.

1. Take bath every day in the morning before going to office.
2. do not eat onions stuffs in the breakfast and Lunch, it really smell bad and people may not like it, like in the case of MOMO
3. Save clean, they do not like mustache much.
4. formal dress, tie not necessarily needed.
5. change inner dress (like ganji, kattu, moja) everyday.

Thanks to all sajha users for the inputs. I just want to add couple since most of them are covered already:

• Invest a lot of time in this early phase of your carrier (possibly 8-10 hours a day). Dont take any chances.
• Eventhough you might not have in-depth technical skills , your enthusiastic towards work and hard work will definitely count. So be it.
• Dont forget to follow up on any action items that you need to complete. Thats how you learn.
• At last, I want you to update this thread after 4 months. Lets see how you progress further.

1) Be attentive, try and listen to what they say and be very clear about your task before you begin, You don't want to be half-way through your work and then realize you have to do it all over again.

2) Always wear a smile and strike up small talk, ask them about their family and themselves. Ask open ended questions though, Americans love talking about their families. Casually mention how grateful you are to have this job.

3) Be on time and always volunteer to do things whenever people reach out to you.

4) Get a haircut, get a gym membership, and wear well-fitting clothes.

1) Shower every morning. And do not put a lot of body spray or cologne. We honestly do not appreciate someone coming in changing the smell of the entire place. However, use deodorant.
2) Wear formal clothes.
3) Do not talk too much.
4) DO NOT MICROWAVE THE NEPALI FOOD. It will stink. If you are eating Nepali food, make sure you wash your mouth after you eat and have some mouth freshner. Just try not to put masala and you will be fine in this department.
5) Be punctual... I am not a big fan of getting in early and stick in late.  Punctuality means getting there on time and putting in your hours. You might have to stay late sometimes, but do not make that a habit.
6) If you have questions, ASK!
7) If you are new, unless you lied in your resume, we do not expect you to know everything. Take your time. It is quality we care about, not quantity. However, quantity with quality is not frowned upon. Do not rush.
8) Like it or not, suck up to your boss. 
9) Lastly, do remember: THERE IS A PROBATIONARY PERIOD.

Moonshine, usually how long does the probationary period last?
And when I address people at work, do I just call them by their first name or do I have to say Mr/Ms?

Just be yourself respect others and seek respect feom other. Do not make too many rules for your yourself to fit in the crowd. Natural people will have no prob adjusting. My theory- have a good snce of humor, laugh usualluy make people forget too many flaws. This is freepotrts 2 cents for you. :)
