Gooood Education...

Isn't that how students should be educated? To be able to think for themselves, as the ultimate goal of their higher education? The confidence and ability to analyze and decide for themselves what's what (what makes sense and what doesn't, what's logical and what is not, what's "true", etc)?

So here's a quote I particularly enjoyed reading. It spoke to me.

Stop this day and night with me and you shall possess the origin of all poems,
You shall possess the good of the earth and sun, (there are millions of suns left,)
You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look though the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the specters in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from yourself.

—Walt Whitman

What do YOU want to get out of your education?
...well i guess...wat me fren wrote made me think...along with ur narration :oD...diff ways we are educated..diff lifes..diff experiences...but path the same?to learn?hehe..ok ok enuf of rambling ;oP hehe..

and movies comes a mth after re?wahahaha..u shud check out the country im now in ;oP hehe..guess could comment a bit more..but i stop...

and yap mum knows best dun they ;o)..hehe..

cheers for sharing again :oD..im revitalized i tell u!!so better make use of that energy to do smthing productive hehe...

good day :oD hehe..(and as always...will be waitn for next one...if time lets me ;oP hehe shudnt be too sure hoina?;oP hehe)...

Like any other story, excellent narration John. But I have a few comments to make on this one. I am not sure of your motive in writing this one. So I shall make 2 simple assumptions:
1. You wrote it to show "how americans learn" (which by the way makes me proud I'm Nepalese/ Canadian...hehe)
2. (the more probable one): You showed how hypocritical and carelsss the western society has become. Mother thinks it's ok her daughter smokes pot and then had an accident and then learns the lesson the hard way....because..well.....she was a pothead herself???? Letting kids go because you made a similar mistake yourself during your times isnt good parenting! Of course the situation can be extrapolated into many aspects of education and the learning path in the american society.
Olney represents the American mind, still barren and confused about immigrants and threatened by them in some ways, the nurse represents the older americans who make up their own philosophies about how society should be, tara represents an innocent girl- stuck between these confused .....potheads.....o and pot? i think pot represents mcdonalds, the sire of american consumerism and materialism!
EXCELLENT STORY. still cant beat your previous one though, ima bit of a romantic.

john galt dai, nam ta kun ho american patriot ko jasto cha tyai pani let me begin, i read your piece, i was so stuned that i had to re-read it again. bhanna le na bhujera. so are u saying that ppl who smoke weed are prone to serious accidents or even death, so what was the point off the squirrel i mean squirrel in indianapolis ani khoi ka ho, i mean tara atleast that made it ali essay jasto hai, so did tara eventually kick her bad bad habit. i mean i hope she is not like the addicts they show on t.v or the mafiaso type sterotypical stigma about once ur in you can't go back attitude. what is your revolutionary mind diverted towards educating potheads like me or u were just too bored that you wrote a 2 page essay on a episode of tara 's life. but i'm going to do u one good and actually learn smth frm ur piece and promise never to mess up so that i'd actually have to regret what i did, or think in short.

i think there was a spelling mistake on 2nd line, get it. just my crazy thought.

Gautam B.,
Thank you seems that only few people agree with it.

Timetraveller,
I try best not to let my stories deliver any message, I leave that to the leaders. But since you have kindled the issue, I want to put forth my few pennies.
1. America still thrives on the happy days where men work at Ford's plants and brought home goodies while women knitted clothes. Dinner was always on the table and jesus on the wall. Century later, americans think Henry Ford is still saving them from all miseries.
2. Americans are still happy, leaving aside metropotitan cities, most of the families have a working father who works either on farm or is a mason or a plumber. One of the children has a criminal record, the other works in McDonalds, mother drinks beer throughout the day, yet they afford a corvette. This is a new american dream.
3. The more upsetting issue, none of these working families believe in higher education as long as there is a food on the table and abercrombie and fitch in the closet. And since they do not realize what they were missing, they are proned to substance abuse.

I was quite impressed by the Jimmy Carter's bestseller - Our endangered values, in writing this story.

Dannyboy,
whitman's poetry is a marvel and thanks for complying with me.

ladainian,
I was equally intrigued by your alias as you were with my story. It is a depiction of loose morales of americans ( need to watch my words, I am not stereotyping a hundred percent). Drug abuse has been more threatening than any middleeast war over decades, yet they find it hard to believe it is more devastating. American simply do not believe in judging thyself before you judge others.

man it would have been better if it was an abortion issue dude, half of america is fat, the other half on drugs or pills or medication, isn't it obvious that there are a lot of miserable ppl in here, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia plague ppl over here the only way yo move forward is to be or use drugs. anyways my class is done tyasaile, bye dude ani next time i'll make sure i have my dictionary open, what was ur SAT verbal score dude or are u a journalism or an enlish major.

It was another good story John. Last one was a bit clichéd. Almost like a romantic bollywood movie. This one however is more pragmatic.
I also spent a good amount of time in the countryside of America. A dry county, churches in almost every block, few fast food joints and one Wal-Mart, less people than in my tole in Nepal, and that was it. The town was as dull as its residents and the lives they were living. The only fun thing to do during weekends was to drive to the nearest liquor store which was about an hour away, get drunk and hangout in Wal-Mart. And yes, that was America, the real America. Not what I saw on movies or on cable channels. I was quite not ready for such a culture shock.
However, I did meet some really nice people. But unfortunately their self-righteous, judge mental and arrogantly flag wavering attitude would just destroy whatever good that had to offer. I pitied those ignorant, illiterate fools. But it is hard to pity them when they go and vote their leaders whose action can change lives of many abroad.

JG,

Good work! Keep it up!! hey JG, believe it or not i was aware of your writings (in a positive way). i read your previous writing and i was stunned by the way you write, the person who is pursuing mechanical engr?? so, i this time, i didn't have the courage to read your article directly from the sajha. i copy/paste in the MS word and tried to get the meaning of those words that i didn't understand. sounds pretty funny huh..!! or does it sound that i am bold enough and hard-working enough to read your article in such a complicated way?? hahahaha....!!!! anyways, i was there in carbondale for 4 years. i went southern illinois universiyt. it's a nice place though, you should also begin driving during the day and see around the southen illinois areas ( uncountable lakes in these areas).

ladainian21,
harey shiva, why would anyone find refuge in narcotics to solve their issues, why not go and seek medical help? And why do only americans have these issues and not us? The last sentence in my reply to you had a grammatical error, I believe you did not feel strongly about it. Further, I am neither a journalism/language major nor I ever appeared for SAT, the errors prove it.

Amazing,
I read your story on the other thread....it was written very well...keep it coming.

Purush,
Thanks for the tip, I sometimes might need it too.

Hurray,
Thanks for replying, and thanks for not replying to my previous thread for which I share the same feeling as you do. Better writing prowess is exhibited by threads like this one, not the one earlier. But people love gossip, it is a hard fact. Love, sex and politics are the three vibrant issues in sajha where people want to pen down their feelings. The earlier threads were not at par with analytical readers like you. Thanks one again.

delicate,
Really, I must have known you then....had some good friends in carbondale. Cannot ever forget those wild party nights.

chipley,
dhanyabad.

JG, I wish you write short sometimes but again, it may not be descriptive. Good to see you around. Keep it up.

thanks for reading jira,
......something I really need to work on. I shall try to make it as succinct as possible, I myself understand it is a painstaking work reading over two pages. Thanks again for the advise.

So Tara needs to smoke pot for another 4 years and BINGO!... she'ld be a nurse like her mother. It would take an awfully long time to be a doc then. May be another + 4 years. Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder what degree would i have earned. Interesting!;)

Keep it coming John!

I have driven past countries- Olney alikes myriad of times just to get glimpse of breathtaking pariries painted with wild flowers and grasses. .
How soon the time has drifted off again to become past! pheww..
The subtle memory of my voyage through dusty roads and ever changing oak thickets, of countries is still residing in my mind.
These days I feel accomplished as i am using my present that has just drifted in from future to feed ducks, turtles and squirrels :)) but in a completely different setting- "the concrete jungle."- mere consequences of cutting edge technology.

Nice narration Galt.
