What hypocrisy?? I know I said bichara..but can't I say it? I felt sorry for the poor goat. But, I do admit I ate his cousin or some sort of relative in Dashain too. But seeing the process of actually being killed..well gives U a different feeling. Sometimes ignorance is a bliss.

And what tarkari? Make it yourself. Don't U have hands? And what jaaile paani sajha? Look who is talking...U R one big hyipocrate. And U better start studying...UR exams are all in one week..that's a killer. All the best!

Xena, I totally agree with you. We organized a huge party where I live with the cultural program, party, after hours DJ etc. But non of that reminds you of being back home. Those pictures from Arkansas dashain party really took me back home. They enjoyed the real-time dashain than anyone else (at least from the Pictures) outside of Nepal. Damn, you guys know how to party!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah, I agree....... bichara khasi!!!!!
P.S. I'm prolly the biggest Khasi lover in this whole world.

Anonymous (khup anonymous ho..ur writing style is so similiar to ur old nick), I was merely experimenting with nepali cooking. I give up! I guess I wasn't born to be a cook. Well the food last time was edible hai? I guess that's good enough..but not really...remember the way our moms used to cook? droool! And me initiating our mini dashain party? Well, I don't know why..but this year, was really into Dashain ko mood. Hopefully, next year, I will celebrate it with my family..can't wait ho! Anyways, I dont' wanna cook. I am suppose to be pampered..remember??? Timi budho bhayera laaz chaina?? U R asking someone younger than U to cook..harey..what has this world come to? :D

Magnolia, I am invited!! Woooohoo! Thanx :) I really like your dashain there compared to others in US. Don't change it to those disco sisco kina Dashain hai? Disco Sisco is too common..we can have it any given day. It's so nice to see Dashain being celebrated in the traditional style :)

Nepalover, u and me...2 votes for Arkansas! :)

good point, nepalover- and xena. the "celebrations" in big cities like nyc and boston and dc are all-out parties and even though the cultural programs are always really great and the food is usually delicious and it is a fun time, it's so far removed from its context. it is a new style of celebrating dashain to go with an american context and reminds me nothing of my celebrations in nepal. don't get me wrong, i do enjoy them, but it's not the same....

but the people in arkansas seemed to have a good, ol'-fashioned dashain. they held it outdoors (which is awesome!) and they kept it SIMPLE! they played volleyball and taas and seemed to have just enjoyed the day. that squirrel freaked me out a little, but the people in the photos looked genuinely happy!

Hi Xena:

I agree with you regarding the celebration of Dasahara in Magnolia, Arkansas. Also, the celebration of Mobile, Alabama is worth pointing out here.

The very similarity of Mobile and Magnolia compared to the other parts of the States Dasahara celebration is, you can feel the warmth and aroma of Dashain in "Home away from Home..." Especially putting Jamara and Tika with the praying- seeing those pictures especially of Alabama and Arkansas makes me so nostalgic of Dashain this year than ever before. I am glad that some of our fellow countrymen have not lost their tradition and essence of being a Nepali in a foreign land. Guys with Daura-Suruwal just look awesome and Gals with those Sarees, Hmmm.....

You guys really kicked the arse of Metropolitan Celebration of Dashain of Boston and New York City.
Good for you guys....

Hope to see more Deusi and Bhailo pictures for coming Tihar.

HD

I have to agree with Xena. I would say that there is a huge difference between how nepalese in small cities like Magnolia or Mobile etc..and in big cities like NYC, LA, Boston follow nepalese culture. Being in cities of different sizes and with varied nepalese population over the past few years, I myself have experienced that small population tend to bring more closeness and understanding among people than larger communities, which I guess is a human nature.More the number...more the differences.
Personally I enjoy being in small cities with less number of people...that way you tend to become close to everyone.

I personally was in Magnolia, Arkansas for some time and I can tell you you can't beat the intimacy and closeness that you get among yourselves in smaller cities like Magnolia. I always miss dullness and aloofness that Magnolia had.
Dr. Dykema has been a father figure to all the Nepalese there; kudos to him!!

sorry if that post seems a bit random, but as we're discussing smaller communities in smaller towns in america, it made sense to me to ask....
