Marwari community wants their representation in interim parliament

Marwari community has also demanded their share in the forthcoming interim parliament, which is to be formed after the promulgation of interim constitution.

Speaking at the national convention of Nepal National Marwari Council, its acting chairman Atma Ram Murarka said that the community, too, has decided to enter into politics and demanded at least two seats for the community in the interim legislature.

Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan, addressing the concluding session of the council, assured the representation of Marwari community in the interim parliament.

Marwari community is a leading business community of the country.

The interim parliament has been proposed to include 330 members – 48 of whom will be nominated to represent various organisations and communities. nepalnews.com sd Jan 06 07

The hard reality of failed and corrupt politics.....CAPT...if you may add..and if you expect us to accept the fact that we should live on with our life accepting the hard reality accepting whatever these political leaders throw at us ,,....and neverhave our thoughts out and every time we do....people like you , bathroomcoffee(DAD) and godzilla etc trash us like we live in a fantasy world of emotion, hate and blame than you should vote for communism...not democracy..........................And for those of you who dont believe that Indians and the MARWARI and india has nothing to do with whats going in the TERAI the marwari situation....who by the way are very rich and controll most of the industries.....linked with export and import of Nepal........you have closed your eyes to a wider problem. I dont favor kicking out the marwaris, they have generations now living in Nepal and their kids were born in Nepal............But where does their loyality lie.....is it to Nepal or India????????? if Nepal .....welcome them ....If India ...KIck em out.........and in the terai...........its the Indian Biharis creating this problem and encouraging nepali madhesis to ask for a different state ....to break from Nepal because the do not want to be called Nepali......dont you people understand???its not us ...its them who wanna seperate...............what does it take to get that in you small brains?????

Bahunkta -

Ever heard of the "Aryans"? Yeah, right, the Bahuns originated in Kumaon and Garwal! And the Garwali and Kumai Brahmins fell from the sky, I presume? The word "Rajputs" ring a bell? And how many of Nepal's Chettris trace their ancestry to them? Where did you learn your facts - some shack in Bihar? And oh, our own symbol of Pahade purity, King Gyanendra, has a lot of Indian blood running in him - shouldn't he be part of the list of people who should be booted out?

Madogg -

"But where does their loyality lie.....is it to Nepal or India????????? if Nepal .....welcome them ....If India ...KIck em out........."

First of all, I wish you wouldn't butcher the use of punctuation like that. Good to know that you would welcome Marwaris if you felt they were loyal. But how do you determine their loyalty? Give them a multiple-choice test? And what gives you the right to question their loyalty? Or anyone eleses for that matter. The future queen of Nepal, if monarchy were to survive, is also from India, should her loyalty be questioned too? The present King's own bloodline has Indian blood - shouldn't the loyalties of the entire royal family be questioned then by the same token? If anceteral origins is the basis for questioning people's loyalties, then where do you draw the line?

".what does it take to get that in you small brains????? "

Why don't we let our respective comments on this thread decide our brain sizes? In all humbleness, I am not the least bit concerned about competition from you.

"The hard reality of failed and corrupt politics..."

From everything you have said so far, I am not sure if you are capable of telling the difference between politics and paranoia let alone corrupt and clean politics.

I don't see any wrong in Marwari community demanding their representation in interim parliament. They are also Nepali, and as Nepali citizens they too have the rights to ask for their representation. Other fringe groups such as the Muslim, Christian etc. should also ask for their representation. When we are readying ourselves for a historic change and when we are demanding an all inclusive parliament, why not have all sectors represented?

Nation and nationalism are just imagined concepts. I mean, what makes us real Nepalis? What is the criteria to determine who is a real Nepali? If someone has been living in Nepal for long, and calls it his home, then I would consider him a Nepali. We are living in an interlinked world, and nation and nationalism are getting obsolete. We travel, we immigrate, we emigrate, we make other countries our home.. and its just a natural process. There's no way to resist the demographic changes taking place in the world or in Nepal. Since I am a student of Chinese history, let me give you an example of how diversity helps in any nation's growth. The Tang dynasty China was the most developed country in the world. Because that time foreigners could come to China, learn Chinese and take the civil service test and become governmnet officers. Many Arabian scientists, African scholars and others from Central Asia came to China and contributed to its growth and made China the most developed country in the world. The latter dynasties did not tolerate the diversity and as a result, China went on a downward spiral from which it is still reeling today.

Remember, nation and nationalism are imagined concepts promoted by the ruling class to secure its rule. That's that. If there's an overdose of nationalism, i.e., xenophobia such as some of the posters in this thread, then that is quite dangerous and out-of-sync in today's world. Let's accept the fact that the Marwari community has been living in Nepal for a long time, their businesses are based in Nepal and they have contributed to our economic growth, and added diversity to our nation. Of course there are some who might have done wrong, but we should not blame the whole community for 1-2 of its members' misdeeds, hoina?

Don't get me wrong, patriotism is good. But when patriotism evolves into nationalism, then its disastrous. Let's not forget that.

"Its not our differences that divide us. Its our inability to accept, recognize and celebrate those differences."

This SOUNDS true.

This sort of argument holds some psychological advantage in that it re-assures us that our collective "victimhood" (something we keep beinging up again and again) is
not some fiction but is rooted in some historical vague unfair-to-us reality.

But

This is simply NOT true, though this makes good conversation with loser byaparis when they have their daily Khukuri Rum (produced by a Tarai, Indian-looking entrepreneur from Birgunj) together in some bhatti in Kathmandu.

If this is true, Rahulvai, can you please provide some historical sources that we can read and study and THEN
make up our mind as to whether this is indeed true?

If that;s your own SUSPICION re: how Marwaris ended up in Nepal, then, sorry, we have no obligation treat your suspicions as valid kurakani points.

OK.
So your anger is NOT really at Nepali Marwaris then?
You are simply pissed off at ALL these businessmen then?

That's fine, and this SHIFTS the terms of this kurakani to the FAILURE of the larger Nepali business community, and that's a separate kurakani altogether.

I admire your patriotism.

I once spent two weeks in Philadelphia -- the city you
are currently based in -- visiting museums and all that, basically admiring the historical legacies of patriotic Americans . . . Thankfully, those Americans created a constitution that had its roots in statements like
"all are created equal".

Even if you learn nothing else in Philadesphia, the City of Brothers, do learn to treat people different from you as equals in the eyes of the law.

I am NOT a professional historian.
Nor do I know much about the palace history.

But I have always been intrigued by many small but seemingly close religious, historical and cultural connections between those who were/are in Narayanhiti Palace and the Magars of the present-day Central
Nepal.

Then again, what do I really know?

n read some of my postings.
don u forget if u r a kirat..u have aryans blood.
yalamber is beleived to be a aryan.
kird the word derived from kurd. wen they moved towards east beleived to have transformed it to kirat.at the time when genghis khan invaded burma n several other nearer parts n they ruled that place for several years. raped many womens. many in burma are also kirats. they r beleive that they changed racially because of invasion. because kirats are only found in eastern side. assam, burma, east nepal.
gurung- the name came from word grong. its a tibetan word.
they prefer to call themselves as tamu do u know wat does tamu means?
newars r said to b originally from valley..they r beleived to have come from egypt. it is found that many things matches. during malla's rule a they brought indian culture aswell like lakhe dance which is beleived to b really originated in south india.
magars found in many parts around the world europe, africa. half of the popn of bahun chettris r beleived to b part of magars.
they travelled from europe to asia through lebanon, iraq, iran.
Still now there is a place called bakhtiyar. where one local tribe in case of big party pays tribute to one group of theirs missing brothers who were beleived to have migrated to east. "this food for our brave gorkha brothers".
kirats also travelled to nepal from west. kirds say that theirs tribe went to east. that is why u find kirds in many countries.
it is simple rule for migration. a person who lives in hill chooses hill, a person who lives in flat land chooses flat land. U know why tibetan r tall n have long faces?
one historian from japan researched about west nepal. one tribe in japan is beleived to have migrated to japan from nepal. crossing tibet, china, laos.

Bahunkto you are a Nepali trying to prove to an Indian (Captain) that you are Nepali, and an Indian is trying to prove that you are truely nothing more than an Indian. So this debate will continue regardless of what anyone says, and is waste of time.

By the way if we were Indian then how come many Nepalese when you ask them if they are Indian or related to Indian we deny it so fast or dont even want to associate with that kind of thinking?

Ashu dai, I think there's some truth to this. If you go and watch the paintings of Jung Bahadur and Ranoddip Singh at the National Museum in Chauni, they resemble more "magar-oid" than "aryans." One histiorian Gyanmani Nepal has done some research on this, I don't know whether it is published or not, but once at the National Museum he was telling me that before becoming Rana, the group was called Kanwar and there is a Kanwar-magar group. It was only with their marriages with the Shah princess and other Chettri groups, their appearance started to change. For example, study the contrast between the paintings of Jung Bahadur and Dev Shumsher. And since the Shahs married the Rana girls, of course, they have more magar blood in them.

Tribhuwan married a Punjabi princess, but I don't know if she gave birth to Mahendra.

As always, feel free to correct me.

I think Ganesh Chettri was a surveyor with the Army, and that's how the peak was named after him. And I believe the first person to publicize this fact was late Dr. Harka Gurung.

ma Jwai, Jai Nepal.
Very cheap and light comment about marwari:
People used to go to toilet in morning and in remote places there are no toilets.
So, they bring lota (full of water) with them.
These marwari's took a lota and entered Nepal border for toilet. But, they found easier way (southern block has produced a favorable envionment for them to sustain in Nepal) and did not return. Most of them entered as beggers. Shame for us.

MaddDUH !!!
Therre you go again linking Marwadis with the Nepal people of terai. THIS JUST SHOWS THAT YOUR RAZOR SHARP BRAIN CANNOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE TWO. YOU JUST SEE PEOPLE OF THAT COLOR. THERE IS NO LINK BETWEEN THE TWO. MARWADIS ARE BUSINESSMEN MOSTLY LIVING IN KTM AND OTHER METRO CITIES AND PEOPLE IN TERAI ARE PRIMARILY FARMERS. BUT FOR A NUMSKULL LIKE YOU PEOPLE OF THAT COLOR ARE ALL THE SAME AIN'T IT ?

Oh Yeah MaadDUH !!
Your questioning their loyalty will really make them feel welcome in Nepal. SMAAT THINKING KID. Your treating them like foreigners would really make them want to remain Nepali. Nepali people have always treated the terai basi like 2nd grade citizen since its inception. They always tend to be grouped in the same boat as Indians(even though they are 100% nepali citizen). And its because of people like YOU who make them feel foreign in their own country by asking their loyalty, linking them with Madhesis etc. etc ITS LIKE ASKING YOUR LAME ASS AFTER YOU GET YOUR US CITIZENSHIP WHERE YOUR LOYALTY IS MORON. HE HE
