from http://blogs.smh.com.au/mashup/archives//004788.html (Visit this link to see the Coca cola ad)

The SMH correspondent in South_east Asia, Connie Levett has a story in the paper (and website) about how Coke paid African and Nepalese actors a paltry $775 for a ten-day shoot in Nepal where they were filming an ad for Powerade (see ad below).

She writes: "Coca-Cola paid between $US40 million ($54 million) and $US60 million for its global World Cup sponsorship deal, and will spend millions more pushing its products during television broadcasts. But during an advertising shoot for its Powerade drink in Nepal in March, Coke paid the stars of its commercial a pittance.

"The company hired 10 young Africans who live in Nepal and 10 local players to perform at high altitude - 3700 metres - for the commercial, which will be screened during this month's football fiesta. The African players were paid about twice as much as the Nepalese for the 10-day shoot above Pokhara

As long as the people who were hired for the ad were fine with it, I don't see any problem.

LMAO. ha ha ha. Maybe it is a big deal for the westerners, but I dont find anythng wrong with it from Nepalese perspective. 40,000 is a lot of money!! (Well everyting depends on perspective)

i relate to waht you are saying, but apparently, there are quite a few. once i was at this place in thamel, interviewing this woman at this masage parlor/hotel, and we were at hte roof and ther was this african guy living in this really shanty, shabby very small one room at the one corner of the roof and he was cleanin his couple of dishes, his room and kitchen was teh same. i was quite surprised to see that there were foreigners living not very better off than our poorest poor. i dont' know if he plays soccer though.

exploiting cheap labor in 3rd world countries is not new. that is however one hell of an ad. i was kinda skeptic about it, but i think it will help make a positive impression of our country, that is if people realize it was shot in nepal.

but i have to add that it is a good thing the ad was shot and the people get paid whatever amount they did. waht would these actors do who were playing soccer in the ad if they were not employed by cocacola? they would not be very well offf would they? they would never make that much amount by cocacola of nepal.
