As a Nepali citizen, I am impressed with the achievements of the new government in
the last three months.

The government's achievements are many and varied that as a mere mortal, I am having difficulty to keep track of all its activities.

As a simple solution, thought I'd start a list of all its achievements so that we
can all take pride in the government's efforts toward making Nepal a "multi-party
democracy, a pro-free market country" and so on and so forth.

The list below is UNRANKED, and contains ONLY what can be VERIFIED to be true
from PUBLISHED Nepal-based newspaper accounts (so I am not making anything up!)

Drumroll, please . . . . .

The government's achievements since Feb 1 2005

1. Shutting down mobile phone communication in Nepal.
2. Allowing Maoist-affected Nepalis to camp out in Tundikhel.

3. Shutting down FM radio news broadcasts altogether.
4. Teaching newspaper editors that they are accountable NOT to their readers but to bureaucrats and military personnel.

5. Appointing those as Zonal commissioners who respond to those in power.
6. Declaring the days on which the King files in and out of Nepal to be public holidays.

7. Stopping intellectuals/professors from attending seminars abroad.
8. Arresting politicians while renewing commitments to multi-party democracy.

9. Planning to give all Nepalis their individual computer IDs.
10. Making a promise to hold municipal elections by the end of this year 2062. [Earlier, there had been another public promise to hold general elections by the end of 2061,
but let's not talk about the past.]

11. Saying that it is about to put an apparatus in place to issue peace bonds to raise money.
12. Saying that Nepal does not need foreign aid [and this statment came from Patriot Number One K N Bista, who has worked his political and Chinese connections to make sure that his family members -- children and grand chiledren -- are well taken care of
in foreign countries.)

I could go on, but with these TRUTHFUL achievements of the present government, let me stop and sip some Starbucks coffee.

Good thread.
But, could #12 be verified in a published media?? Especially the part that resides inside parenthesis.

well saathi
i must say this was a good observation.. but one thing i fail to understand is why we always treat every single govt tht comes to power with such criticisms in really short time? without even giving it enoguh time"???? besides, as we all know we have to make some sacrifices if we want peace in our country! i bet no one wants anything but peace in present context.... i agree tht new govt has made some significant changes but lets wait n see how they do.. lets give them sometime..... (do we have any other chioce left?)

RBaral,

The answer to your question is: YES.

[This leads to my other question that has puzzeld me for the longest time: WHY is it
that the children and the grandchildren (whom one meets socially and casually in the
US, UK and other countries) of Panchayati stalwarts are unfailingly courteous, nice
and likable people, and that they are always on their best behaviours when they are around other Nepalis?

Is that their 'charm offensive'? I mean, is it that the more charming and more likable
they appear to be, the more difficult it is to bring up their family's political history to dislike them?

I don't know the answers.

[One glaring exception here is Manjushree Thapa, of course, who -- right or wrong, however you look at it -- speaks her mind in her own way, distancing herself from her family's PRESUMED political sympathies.]

Still, talking to most of these panchayati children, you'd never guess the loot and the misuse of power that went on for 30 years on their fathers'/grandfathers' watch . . . behind that veneer of polish, sophistication and easy, back-slapping bonhomie. Then again, to their credit, some of these kids have imbibed the Western ethos of success, and they are now busy re-inventing themselves as upwardly mobile professionals with . . . no links to their family's Panchayati past.

Then again, hey, Nepal aama ko santaan thari thari kaa . . .

********************************

Further achievements of the new government:

13: In a further show of how Nepal practices democracy, the government has restricted some high-profile lawyers from traveling abroad (to India).

14. The ambassador-designates since Feb 1 have all been -- in an unprecedented move -- drawn from the ranks of the army.

Whatever govt./King is doing, it's doing in such a way as to create boilings in people. Now what type of boiling, that depends on what type of people you are .. but certainly they are deliberately creating this. What the news are writing is not important... how can you read what's actually going inside??? all those newspapers are seized... what do you expect... one thing is clear.. the way Gitija and other leaders are keeping quiet.... Fuc* this country gonna suffer a lot.... Bharat Mohan is now out.. ha ha.. give him 2 corers he will keep quiet for ever.... King G has tons and tons of money.. and the types of leaders we have in Nepal.. all of them can be bought... So what the fu*ck to expect..

PD, you forgot the references for your second essay:

Why F_ck is the Best Word in the English Language...
by Who the F_ck Knows

All about the word sh_t
(I forgot the name of the author)

Here's a non-market based policy recommendation for you:
1) Find a better place to use these words
2) One of the reasons why markets fail is because of externalities. You are creating exactly those effects here.

Thank you very much..

The blue turban PM Singh has given words to give arms to kill nepalis by nepalis. Isn't that the achievment of the new govt. of Nepal? The new govt. of Nepal also forced India to say that "you can choose the friends, but not neighbors". Political leaders were revealed naked... isn't that the new govt's achievement? Tulsi Giri was brought back to Nepal.. he is the one who rather left Nepal when pachayat was slipping away.. just for principle he left the country at that time.. and remained away from Nepal... it seems he really fought for principle... but compared to him, the current politicians of Nepal were revealed opportunists without any principles but hungry for only money.

PD,

I think you will be better off accepting the fact that you DIDN'T get what I said! I have seen your postings elsewhere. Let me suggest you one thing, PD: you don't have to respond to EVERY thread!

PS,

Just out of curiosity, what's YOUR specialty? I dare you to indulge in an intellectual debate without getting personal. Whether one has gotten married or not is not your business, you know that right? Personally, I do not recall supporting fully what Ashu says, but it gets on to my nerves when people resort to name calling or delving into other people's personal lives (which, unfortunately, Ashu himself has done in the past). Now that I have pointed my fingers at you -- like you did to Ashu here -- I am eager to see how you react!

PD and PS,

Best wishes to you.

Achievement number 16:

16: Deuba arrested. Prakash Man Singh arrested . . . on supposed but not yet proven corruption charges. [Even if one does not like Deuba and Singh, there's something odd about these arrests. Still, a prediction: They'll barigain with the government, get some concessions and will be free by next week. After all, this cycle of arrests and releases has been going on and on for a long time anyway.]

17. The Nepal Bar Association, led by Shambhu Thapa, has STOPPED its demands that the Chief Justice resign for his remarks at some conference in Australia. [This is representative of the nature of protest-politics in Nepal: jump up and down and create a big halla for two whole days with no clear argument and then hunker down quietly. Still, the cleverer protestors get international donors to fund their "look, how bad the stituation is in Nepal" trips abroad which are great in arousing sympathy abroad but
in terms of concrete results, they achieve next to nothing.]

---> You will never get over the grudges you have against that man, will you? Heck, it's a free competition. If your strongly believe your I-am-right-because-I-am-always-in-between path is right, why don't you, with all the credentials that you flaunt in Sajha even at times you are not required to, get an INGO sponsor your trip to the U.S.?

You just posted a list of "achievements" of the government in a way that even a third grader would understand that you are being sarcastic. Dinesh Prasai came to the U.S. to educate the people here of what the only-me-and-my-followers-are-above-the-law government is doing in Nepal. I mean, shouldn't you be happy that someone is in the U.S. to tell the people what even you think is going run in Nepal? Or is it that you have so much against Prasain that you will dislike, for the rest of your life, everything he does?

Result-oriented stuff...hmmm...by the same token, may I please ask you how "result-orinted" your daily postings in Sajha are? I mean, if you think informing people, sharing your opinions is not result-oriented -- which both Prasain and you are doing -- what is?

Agreed re: Sambhu Thapa thing.
