You wont find any difference in quality between these two cameras. The thing that
makes you take good pictures is the lens. Dont buy too expensive camera to begin with,
invest on good lens. If you are new to photography I highly recommend 50mm lens from
either side. It is the classy pro grade lens and unbelievably cheap.

Ifyou are buying point and shoot cameras then Cannon tops the list. I have used couple of Canon camera. But if you want digital SLR cams then I recommand Nikon. It's best in quality. I've used both Nikon and Canon SLRs. I own Nikon D50 and one of my good friend bought Canon. We both liked Nikon's quality. We both recommended our another friend Nikon and he bought Nikon D40 and quality is as better as it can be and this is a upgraded version.Even better.

Euta Nepali,

Ofcourse Nikon.

D40 does not have motor so you can only use lens with motor for auto focus.
I have not used D40 but it's a nice entry level Digital SLR.

Next is D50 if you want little bit more functionality
but if you are ready to spend $999 on body then I recommend D80 (I love it )

so my suggestion is either go with D40 or
D80 with cheaper lens then in future you can add lens of your choice which ranges from
$150 to more than thousand

Sweet one lens cover all (from wide angle to good zoom)l is 18-200mm with VR but it will be big investment.

Ya D40x is the cheapest one and it is a very good performer.
But there is one thing about D40x I will tell you. It doesnt have a focusing motor
drive. That means it can only autofocus the lenses that have their own motors.
Those kind of lens are denoted by AF-S in Nikons case. Although all the new Nikon
lenses are AF-S, it can be a bit of limiting factor if you want to use third party lens
or nikon's old lenses. It is kinda nagging limitation (espcially for me cause I have only
one AF-S lens). But Canons dont have problems like that.
If you want to stick to nikons without these limitations, D70s is the way to go. I trhink
they are pretty cheap these days. If you find canon cheaper, go for it.
Dont waste too much time in thinking because you should be using your time to
shoot instead. Good luck, and share your pics with us.

@ssolemiss I did consider getting 18-200 but I soon found that it was bit of jack of all trades master of none kinda lens, so I avoided it. These days I am finding third party lens such as
Sigma, Tamron to be really good performers while being cheap.

I use Olympus E-500 and I absolutely recommend Olympus E-510. The photographs are great, and I really like it. However, you might have to pay a couple of hundred more for Olympus then the nikon D40x.
