aba k bhannne yesta buda lai bhir bata khasna khojni gorulai ram-ram bhan na sakincha kad thapna sakinnna ki kaso hau ational reconciliation policy still relevant: KP Bhattarai Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, Sept 9 - Nepali Congress (NC) founding leader and former Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Sunday claimed that the National Reconciliation Policy of BP Koirala is still relevant. In a press statement today, Bhattarai opined that the increasing distance between the king and political parties would only weaken nationality, independence and democratic practices. Stating that the national recondition policy would be still relevant in coming days, the octogenarian leader has also asked the NC not to erase its own history. Bhattarai’s comments have come after the party’s central working committee adopted a proposal for a federal democratic republic last week. Stating that the institution of monarchy has unifying role for religious, cultural, ethnic and political groups, Bhattarai also made a point that the prevailing transitional period in the country would come to an end only through unity and reconciliation. He added that a feeling of vengeance would only further divide the nation. Nepal’s first elected prime minister and NC founding member, BP Koirala had propounded the policy of national reconciliation in 1976 when he returned from self-imposed exile in India. Bhattarai, who is placed second in the party hierarchy, has been living a politically secluded life in his Bhainsepati residence. He has not attended the interim parliament since April uprising last year insisting that the two factions of NC must unite before that.

IF - Your sincerity and modesty puts me to shame at times. If only the politicians - Kings and commoners alike - would show half the sensibility and generosity you displayed, perhaps we wouldn't even be having this conversation. You have a good one too. I shall continue to look forward to hearing your ideas - any conversation with you is always a great pleasure. Best wishes. Good nite.

CH, I read your comments. What fustrated people simply expressed was that era was atleast peaceful. You went to explain "why" it was peaceful. It's totally irrevalent to people who have no political, philosophical inclination whatsoever but wanna go with daily life as usual. Does feeling good in the past needs explaination? Peace is measured by its success, do you not agree? You further challenged to rise from street to restore it but you know clearly that is not possible without autocratic force? Was it chosen from people before? You beat the crap out of Bill O'Railey, spin doctor. By the way KP is wiser than anybody in congress. No matter how congress goes in CA, they have to support monarchy for their existence and don't want red nation; I bet with anyone. If congress posses Londup mentality then I lost.KP knows no matter what path chosen, meeting point is the same. He said so because later he can say," I told you so", clever isn't it? Sad part is that Paras will be the king.

Frequent Nepal bandas /strikes /julus/ chakkajams ( Some districts remained closed for 49 days staright! Must be a world record.) 7. Endemic corrouption 8. height of Cronyism and nepotism and favouritism 9. No petrol/ No water ( people have to queue for 8 hours to get their share of only 2 liters of petrol, that too if they are lucky 10. Melamchi 11. Tanakpur 12. Mahakali 13. Dhamija 14. Lauda 15. Chase Air 16. South China Airlines 17. Royal Nepal (the airlines had four boeings and 12 small aircrafts in the 80s, now it has none!) 18. Sajha Yatayat ( 400 buses back then, now none!) 19. Educational institutions have been politicized 20. Many factories received under grants that were operational in 80s have been closed long since to to politicization. 21. Unionism everywhere 22. Goit 23. Jwala 24. Tiger 25. Cobra 26. Terai Army 27. Liberation Army 28. Limbuwan 29. Khambuwan 30. Nepal is now an Indian state, the capital of Nepal is New Delhi Phew! Let me catch my breath now.

Let's think of 3 different points in time. A = Past ie panchayat rule B = Present ie Maoist pseudo democratic rule C = Future Let's consider the following variables X = Common Nepali living in the village a classic village commoner Y = Common Nepali living in cities such as pokhara, ktm ie a classic city commoner Now if you consider how X and Y have been affected in timeframes A and B. And also consider the possible scenario in the Future C. If you compare the living conditions of X and Y during timeframe A and B, there has not been much positive change. The conditions have worsened to be precise. During timeframe A, things remained constant with few atrocities that you heard of once in a while. But peace prevailed and the quality of life was consistent. If you determine a scale for peace and quality of life, on average the scale was somewhere in the 80%s and consistent. If you look at the wealth line it was probably on the 10%s. Fast forward to current times of the Maoists also known as the SPAM, they were able to quickly downgrade the peace and quality of life on the average of commoners X and Y from the high 80 percentile to low 10's with the wealth index consistent. So obviously the common person has lost 70% peace of mind and quality of life with their wealth level constant low within the past few years of SPAM rule. All this while the common citizen is being told that this is necessary to boost the peace and quality of life back to the 80% and the wealth index to a higher number. If you look at the trend, these current politicians are responsible for bringing the peace and quality of life index from 80 to 10 within 10 years. What are the chances of them bringing any positive index up? IMHO they have made such irreparable damage to the social, political system that it is pretty impossible to make any progress in the peace, quality of life and wealth index of the country. Lot of naively optimistic people want to believe that this is all for the better but there have not even been an iota of hope when it comes to the development of the country or it's democratic stance. Thousands of innocents have lost their lives while the politicians promise a better fairer democratic country only to disappoint with lies, atrocities and unfair prevalent practices encouraged by the rule of the gun. If we the educated people buy in to their rhetorics of impractical developments in the future, then the future of our country is doomed.

Captain...no wonder why you are babbling all over here..getting paid to speak your mind...must be a good job...well..we don't get paid out here..I just say how I feel. You tell other people to go back to nepal, are you stuck in nepal or in some other country? If you are in other country, why don't you go back and do yourself what you've been babbling out here. Or if you are there in nepal..what have you done so far? So, stop telling other people what to do and what not. As we all know, we are just here to express our point of view. Once again, no one said panchayat is good and all we are saying is atleast there was peace in the country. So, if you think you are all that what you say out here, do something about it.

Nepaliheart - In case you missed the sarcasm, so do I (say what I feel). As for Panchayati nostalgia, not my cup of tea. I said what I felt about people's perceptions of peace and Kishunji's statement and stand by it and haven't seen anything new and worthwhile to comment on or make me change my mind. To the rest, As for "Dear Panchayat, Sweet remembrance" , if anyone want's to indulge in it, let them, but I see little more than entertainment value in it for me at this time, with the notable exception of some of the points Isolated Freak mentioned.

CH, to observe some points in history as positive and negative is not really being nostalgic. If that was the case then we should burn all the history books I don't think anything is wrong with comparing things with the past when the whole current republican thing is hell bent of proving that 'the past sucked that is why we need a new system.'

Kishunji urges all to rise above party interests

The only living founding member of the Nepali Congress, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, has said national sovereignty is at stake and urged all, including the Maoists, to rise above the party interests to work for safeguarding the national integrity.

Former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai addressing a press conference at his residence in Bhaisepati, Lalitpur, on Monday, Oct 08 07. Bhattarai urged the political parties to rise above their partisan interests to safeguard national integrity. nepalnews.com/rh

During a meeting with the reporters at his residence at Bhaisepati Monday afternoon, Bhattarai said the leaders and the parties must come together at this critical situation.

He said it is time for handing over the leadership to the younger generation and requested all to work to this direction adding that a new leadership was necessary in newer circumstances.

He also vowed to advocate for handing over the nation's responsibilities to young leaders who understands the needs and feeling of this generation.

Bhattarai said he will attend the first sitting of the special session of the interim parliament this Thursday.

He stressed on the relevance of monarchy for national integrity and sovereignty but clearly in a ceremonial roles making commitments to protect the people's power and democracy.

Earlier, soon after the Nepali Congress Mahasamiti decided to go for a democratic republic, Bhattarai termed it as a diversion from the principles of BP Koirala and Ganesh Man Singh and severed all ties with the NC.

Bhattarai also rejected the possibility of a military coup by the king or any other groups at this period.

Bhattarai had long remained silent but has come to limelight in national politics after NC mulled for federal democratic republic. nepalnews.com ia/rh Oct 08 07
