with due respect to the research work, i don't find anything particularly interesting about the finding. it's quite obvious that white collar jobs are more stressful. it's easier to work at the execution level because you are supposed to do what you are told to whereas white-collar people have to come up with thorough research and plans of actions which require creation and innovations. they are always at their toes with more responsibilties which become overwhelming at times hence more stress, which leads to depresstion. . it's not a rocket science! wow... only if money was everything......i wouldn't give it a damn! :P LooTe

Not at all surprising.. Well, for me, I would be depressed if I’m away from my family. Social bonding, be it family, friends or relatives, is very important to keep you sane. In my opinion, because privacy and space is considered an important aspect of their lives, they tend to alienate from the loved ones…hence depression. That’s how I perceive it…For me family and friends

of course... there r different aspects of being depressed... list could be long like sndy says it could be alienation... or as loote opines it could the outcome of being more responsible... we all must have been depressed in a way or d other in our life once or more u know sometimes knowing things better could be the source of depression i will tell u how? d story goes like this...once a man well educated n in a level of executive got problems in his genitals...mind u guys this is real story n i m sharing wat i have observed during my professional life........ it was ullcer n as obviousl he had unprotected sex with someone who he trusted d most that guy went a doc n many tests were conducted on him b4 the results came he went through a number of means of information available to know wat actually happened n wats the prognosis n 1 of them was internet fianally he came up with d idea that he shud undergo the hiv test also which initially wasnt ordered by the examining doc.... but to his misfortune(or rather say of medical science)1 cant be called hiv -ve 100% until his 6 months(coounting from the day of unprotected sex) blood samples r -ve n he knew that from internet n also from his doc he went mad how can i lead a normal life in 6 months wen i dont know if i m hiv-ve or +ve?that was his question he slipped into depression he lost interest in his job, sports, started confining oneself at room n find solace at drinks n smoke he broke up with his gf n whole world didnt know wat is happening with him?n his condition was known to either his doc or he himself no1 else n tragedy was he cudnt himself share n doc cant disclose it to even his family without the patient consent as he is bound by HIPPA(Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) that 6 months were his worst days....... he wasnt himself many a times he thought of self-murduring somehow smoke n drink gave him life finally his tests were -ve but his ordeal didnt end he later developed PTSD(post traumatic stress disorder)-ost-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal and even a minor ailment would cause a lot panic n ordeal in hIM his vision, his way of thinking all changed in life he started a hermit life....... this is depression n the deadly consequence of it moral of the story:its ur turn buddy, post wat u feel we shud learn from this..... bikash kc

Interesting....Although some of the things mentioned above are plausible, I think a bigger reason could be that depression is identified in white collar workers more. For instance, to afford psychiatric care 1) you would need to have enough insurance and/or $$ 2) you need to have enough exposure to discussions about depression so that you would wonder if you have depression yourself. For instance if all your friends see a shrink, you would be more likely to see one too. 3) you also need to be educated enough to understand that if there is something wrong, you need to get help. So I think, it's rich and well educated people who tend to be DIAGNOSED more. In other words, the blue collar workers may still be depressed, the only difference being that they do not know how important it is to get help or that they do not have the resources. If this was published in a major medical journal, it should have talked about the things I just mentioned. If it did not, it was probably published in a crappy journal, and I would take the findings with a grain of salt. Btw, can you provide the reference? I am not a medical guy, but this is interesting.

. Actually everybody has depression. It has limit. Somebody who has often depression episode and cannot concentrate on basic things in his life, he should be able to declare him sick. Then only any kind of therapy works. Many rich and famous have this problem that they become doctors themselves, prescribes self therapy that never works and lands finally in WARDS.. . .

Depression among white-collor ppl? That's obvious!!! I don't understand why they had to spend thousands of $$$ to do that finding? They should have simply asked makers of depression medication like prozac or paxil who their target market is and they would get the answer.

its not all abt money my dear friend pupiffy.... u cant directly interprate from the database of pharmaceutical companies as they have huge business interest n they target where dey can make big bucks.... u must have idea some 6 months back U.S supreme court had slammed heavy penalty on cigarettes companies which had promoted light brands as potentially less hazardous 1 but it was turned out to be d ploy by them to attract more customers at the cost of their health.... so still u advocate asking d companies? wat i m trying to prove here is paying tribute to research n upholding its finding..... sabai lai chetana bhaya.........

I keepseeing this commercial in TV... where does depression hurt? EVERYWHERE. who does depression hurt? EVERYONE!... this is when they show a little boy..... AND THAT IS HEART_BREAKING. people who get depressed not only go through mental...but physical trauma as well. AND>>> IT IS NOT JUST IN YOUR HEAD> so, if anybody says, they are depressed,,,,please listen to them and dont make fun of them. It could be far more serious than you would like to admit. PLEASE help yourself and help OTHERS> Depression should not be overlooked. In the city where i live, an young guys has committed suicide...... he tried to bring it up with his frens and family.... nobody thought it was serious. IT IS NOT A MOOD SWING>....... DEPRESSION IS A CLINICAL DISORDER.
