Hey IT_guy, let’s make this clear first; Nepal did not become secular and republic due to people’s will. There was no referendum or a general consensus. It was all decided by few Maoists leaders and some politicians. This you cannot deny.
I am all for protecting the rights of minorities. But you should not forget that any specific country exists not only due to its geographical boundaries. A country like Nepal has a rich history, culture and its own language. The nepali language as we know today was made the official language of Nepal during punchayat regime but it was needed to bring everyone, every ethnicity together under one idea, the idea of a country called “Nepal”. Language does not only have a role in communication, it is a big part of identity. So is a flag. Country is an idea, a concept, but we humans need something we can touch, feel, hear and see. So we have national flag, national anthem, national language. Supreme being or an unknown (however you want to call it) is an idea, a concept, but the symbol Om represents it.
It’s not because a country has changed its course that it should forget its past and destroy its history. England got rid of absolute monarchy but they still sing “God save the Queen/King” as their national anthem. France chopped their king’s head, but they did not destroy Versailles. You need history, your past to remind you of where you came from so that you do not get lost on your way to the future.
