Hey,

I went to Ocean City last summer and worked there and I also worked in Minnesota (on campus). I no longer live in Minnesota because I graduated already.

Now that the time for taxes has come, I'm in a huge dilemma. When I filed for my taxes, it said that I owed 900 bucks to the state of Maryland while I would get a total return of 600 from Minnesota. I wonder if I should completely omit the W-2 off my workplace in Maryland in my Tax filing. I'm in dire condition, financially and I really did have high hopes but the dumbasses in Maryland didn't take a single penny off my paycheck.

Please help.

. Are you filing 1040 NR or 1040?  I can not suggest on 1040 NR. But if you are using 1040, you should have tried online filing. You may end up getting refund from both State. Can not comment a lot but mostly the software will ask you the time you were residing on each state and earnings.  Give a try and see the result.
For non-complicated tax filing I will ask to go with the one charge less ( I have been with tax-act over 6 years, similar to turbo tax ).  Once you do and let us know if you need further help. Please do not seek without trying first, knowledge is power.

syanjali, I appreciate your comment but I don't think you read my initial post. I've already tried filing it online and it says that I owe the state of MD 900 Dollars while I'll get 600 back from Minnesota. I'm thinking abt skipping the MD when I finalize the taxes....what do you reckon I should do?

I'm filing 1040EZ as I've been living in the states for 6 years myself.

you can omit now but eventually they will make you pay. Maybe it is a better idea only if you are broke right now. They will for sure send you a letter within two-three years. If you think you will be better off in two threee years then you should try this. You can pay then. There is no penalty as anyone can make mistake while filing their taxes. they will send you first notice in two to three years and dont make a mistake of not paying them at that time because they can even drag you to court if they want.

Papermoon  is right,

If you have w-2 of that State you must show and file state taxes. Don't CHEAT with IRS. for instance, if u are making mistake for the money that u suppossed to refund, they don't care but if you are making mistake for the money that you owe they won't let you do that till you die. They can even get your personal account. Trust me man.

You're willing to receive $600 but want to avoid $900 due amount towards MD States. Wouldn't be better off  if you file both returns and the refund you'll receive helps to pay the balance due?

Any Federal returns???

You were receiving paycheck from MD employer but you were NOT AWARE that your employer didn't withhold your tax from your earnings. Smell Fishy!! But the guy who just celebrated 6 years in US.

Conclusion:  Take your responsibility and clear your tensions now.

Alexandria, I graduated with a degree in Accounting too and I'm aware of the consequences but you should know that less than 1% of taxes filers get audited.

Any more comments?

Here is my opinion;
If you are working in adjoining state, they may not deduct state tax you are working but will withheld for the state you are residing.

You reside in two different state in the tax year 2009. You will be getting two or more W-2 forms and your state withholding are from two states.

If you do online tax it usually asks,  did you reside whole year or partially , and will prompt you to put the date you reside in each states. It will automatically calculate your refund from each state. Couple year ago helped out of state tax, California and other.  He got refund from each state.  My personal opinion is, did you check online , how it works? Then you ask question what happened?
You trying to avoid filing one of the state tax, which is not a good idea, most of the case you may end up getting refunds.
Am I clear or got what you needed?

Syanjali bro, while I totally appreciate your willingness and effort to shed some lights, I think you're refusing to pay any attention to my initial post. Like I've already said, I've already finalized my tax filing but it says that I'll get some refund from MN while I owe 900 bucks to MD and I can actually skip filing the taxes of Maryland.

Plz note that I live in the state of Texas now. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?

Ani why are some halfwits flagging this topic? Don't you morons have something better to do? I'm seeking some help in this topic. Aba help magne topic lai ni flag garidine? You idiots.

So far my understanding about withholding, most of the time state withholding are enough for your state tax liability unless there are other things. Accordingly for each state you work would be sufficient withholding for tax liability.
I may have to look MD's tax practices, if you reside MD and your earning in any state will be earning of MD may make you pay taxes because you have not enough holding for MD tax. But most of the case it will ask how many days you stayed on each state and earnings from each state.
If it shows you owe to MD, I suggest to clear it out. You do not want a mess to be carried forward too  long.  You will end up interest and may be penalty?

I have suggestion, as I did to others. March is lousiest month for tax season. Visit to nearest H and R Block tax station. They will put all info and give you the numbers you will be receiving from Federal as well form State. Do not hesitate to walk out because you do not have to pay dime until filed. Just a wild guess, you may have omitted some info that is leading you to pay in MD or you may be right unless we redo and check if numbers are correct.
If you give me the numbers ( couple buck up or down, no ss, no name but state and zip code)
Exactly they are in box 1,2, 12, 16,17 and date you stayed in each state. Any other income and deductible you have claimed. Email me I will run number for you and will tell you if you owe to MD or not.
