the process is very simple just like F-1; check

You may have to apply from the country of your origin. I am not sure about your status in Canada, if you are a Canadian permanent resident, the provisions might be different. It's not like stamping H4 at US consulate in Canada. All the best

About three years ago, I had applied (as a PR of Canada) for a J1 for postdoc position in US. The consulate was in Ontario and the process went smoothly. If I remember it correctly, I collected my visa within two days.
