The sad fact is that Girija and Prachanda are deciding the fate of monarchy. These two politicians are the ones people wished to flush from the toilet before Gynendra volunteered to make a fool of himself.

If king Gyanendra did not do a satisfactory job I think the people did not persevere instead they chose to take the side of the opposition to make things hard for the King who was indeed having a tough time trying to resolve critical situations. If you guys can see a brighter future in the leadership of Prachandra and Girija it is like wishing for water in the desert or even wishing your dead loved ones could come alive!!!

Dimple how long would the people persevere? How many years have the royals ruled Nepal and how backward has the nation been? How do you persevere with the king who put convicted killer as his minister? How do you persevere with a King who tries to stiffle mass uprising with bullets?

I'm surprised there are still blind supporters of the king who wish he was in power.

Prachanda and Girija are not the greatest of people but they don't live in palaces with billions of dollars in their bank accounts. They can be brought to justice unlike the king and his family who have loved to be above the law.

no i am not Birbhadra. but why chabil?
Vincent you don't get the blog. it is about the shah dynasty. the thread is not about me. it is about the leaders taking responsibility and holding them accountable for the responsiblity they have taken. mind u they live a very privileged life. all the fancy cars, parties, jee-hajuri, prestige,shaan..etc.. but for simple argument purpose, i will answer u. may be you are unaware but,uh hu i am not the king or a leader that promises people to deliver.nor did my family have unrestrained power and access to resource (wealth, military, advisors ...) for centuries.but i wish i were a king..who wouldn't? all the palaces.. all the wine the flows not to mention the women.. glory and power and ofcourse the duty to serve. yeah i would love to be the king and take the challenge, but the reality is i ain't one! nor have i seriously thought over it although i don't mind being romatic about it. .so, where do i see myself in the current mix of things? not as nearly as resposnible as the people in power who had a chance to make a difference. will i make a difference? will i do sth.? who knows? maybe i will maybe i won't.. have i done anything? sure i have, from where i stand, i have made positive contributions. no matter what surely i won't screw things up as badly as a number of shah kings have AFTER TAKING the RESPONSIBILITY. bordega, stop being personal.. this is hardly a place where i will place my resume on show to prove my service or my credentials. we are discussing current affairs; so get back to the point. ie, end of the shahs as a dynasty..mind you, your lovable rulers have not gone yet.. have they? did the ranas really go away after'51; did the panches go away after '90, did the french aristrocracy stop after the revolution.. nope.. see, leeches never die with the monsoon. they come back the very next wet season.

dimple, like the great king prithvi narayan shah, instead of uniting the country, gyanendra divided us by isolating other political voices, who too were against the maoist.
he did not do a good job. he could have been very effective if he were a behind the scenes player. but he wanted front row ticket to the freak show. now, the freak show has gobbled him up. burp!!!!! excuse me.

In my opinion the king has been made the victim. People who keep close track of Nepalese politics and those who are unbiased knows this very well. I also blame the lack of political experience of the king for this. He failed to understand the dirty game of politics.

think about the scenerio just before the king overtook power. People were utterly frustrated with the political parties and the maoists. The king had reamained silent for 12 years and the political parties ruled the country from the front seat. The made 12 govts in 12 years and always failed to get united even when the country really need them. after the king took power the political parties were very successful in transferring the frustration of the mass towards the king.

I agree that there is serious problem in our society. The problem facing Nepal is cast inequality, gender euality and ineqality properties and lot others. The country is not able to generate jobs for the growing populations. Removal of monarchy does not solve these problems. THEY CAN PROVE THEMSELVES ONLY IF THEY ADDRESS THESE PROBLEMS.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR THEM AS WELL AND THE FRUSTRATIONS OF THE MASS WILL SURELY SHIFT TOWARDS THEM.

If i am not mistaken the King had asked the people to bear with him for three years and I think perseverence for three years was not asking for too much!! Now we cannot blame all the wrongdoings of others on the King that is not fair!!! I also think the people he chose to help him let him down and I think personally he made a horrible choice in picking his set of ministers. I also think the people who were acting as his advisors also led him astray, but such flaws is unacceptable I guess!! Even after all is said and done I still think we have trusted the wrong people as our leaders and don't you think Pachandra will happily move to the Royal palace if the King were to vacate it????Come on nobody complains about Bush living in the White house even though the Americans are not happy with him so why do you have objections about the King living in the palace??? That is so uncalled for and insignificant to even ponder about when Our country is facing more severe problems!!!

The king is being made a scapegoat.. nothing else.

WTF did the political leaders do in the past 12 years???????????? And WTF did the Maoists do? They completely destroyed our beautiful country.

Dimple I thought you were smarter than this "Come on nobody complains about Bush living in the White house even though the Americans are not happy with him so why do you have objections about the King living in the palace?"

Do you not know that Bush is not in the white house permanently? He is there for 2 more years and he's out. The people now realize their mistakes that's why the democrats won major seats in the November election. It's just a wrong move to compare American President with nepal king. The king has encroached upon the royal palace for hundreds of years and no matter how much wrong he has done, there is no process to replace him. The King is a feudalistic landlord who can do whatever he wants. He is only a human being and he should be reminded that he's just that.

Lot of Shah's and Rana's (not all) act as if they are superior human beings than the rest of Nepalis because of their royal connections. Dudes and dudettes just because your grandfathers or great grandfathers have spilled a lot of blood in the bloody history of Nepal, that doesn't make you any better person than the people you look down upon like sarki or damai. This is only for those Shah/Rana's who feel they are superior. I know there are some who are more down to earth, and this is not meant for them.

So again I think the problem with you is how long the King has lived in the palace!! I see no problem who lives where and for how long, Unlike presidents you can't expect Kings to move from one palace to another then that would also not be right, it would be like Saddam Hussein owning several Presidential palaces. I still think nepal was a far better place to live in and also declared by many countries a Zone of peace during the time of Late King Birendra, whether you call it supression or opression at least there was peace. Talking about sarki and damai's I don't think the King has a hand in it. Hinduism brought about the caste system and people who got the opportunity made the most of it by discriminating ones own by thinking they were lower caste. It is sad and pathetic but I have heard that the Shah kings never felt superior in caste and creed and always treated everyone in their kingdom with respect.

Dimple one simple question to you. Do you think the king would eat from the hand of a sarki no matter how clean the person is?

The fact is the king is on top of the feudalistic society in Nepal and that system encourages the division of classes. I think it's time for everyone to be equal no matter what their caste is.

Again, do answer the question: Do you think the king would eat from the hand of a sarki no matter how clean the person is?

Yes or No.

I cannot speak for the present king but i have heard stories about Late king Birendra who was making a visit to the remote parts of nepal and while he was walking with is ADC they came to a small hut that was owned by a kami and he insisted on stopping there and even when the ADC tried to convince the king to leave he insisted on having a meal there so does that answer your question. Our Kings were educated inIndia and abroad and I think the kami damai concept did not bear any significance to them. Now if you doubt my source I heard it from the ADC 's family and I was impressed.

During the king's visits to the various parts of country in previous yrs he receives flowers from the hands of everyone waiting to see him. the people were not asked their caste before he received the flowers.

The king appointed a sarki as a minister.

I hope this answers your question

Live wire,

I understand the value and vigor of this thread. I didnt want to bring this out, but now that you have asked for it, heres a bit of history for you. The Shah kings have always worked closely with the thapas, basnet, pandeys and kunwar (ranas)...read the history books if you dont believe me. Having established that why shouldnt we kick these people out of the country too? whos gonna take the blame for these groups who worked for the kings, but stopped thinking for the benefit of themselves?

After the end of the Shah of Iran many people fled their country in fear of their lives I hope we don't face the same fate if that should ever happen (God forbid)!! Bad enough the situation is such that people from all walks of life are willing to leave Nepal for a better prospect anywhere else even to Iraq where there is war going on...Such is the fate of our land so don't wish yourselves something which you are going to regret later... no use crying over spilt milk... rather it is high time to reflect on what is the actual problem..!!

vincent,
read my earlier posts, i have mentioned about darbaria families and their politics. yes, they messed up too. but who was their boss? who brought them in as advisors? the royals.. once again, incompetence in every part, even when surrounding themselves with advisors and courtiers..for a dynasty who played or could have played a significant role for over 230 years, except for a handful of rulers, majority can add 'incompetent' as their middle name. once again, this is about holding powerful people accountable for their actons or lack of it.
dimple, i like your simplistic posts tara i don't even know where to begin....
