Curious whether anyone's renewed their passport recently, and how it went for them.

I was dumb-struck  by the attiutude of the Nepal Embassy at DC when I inquired on this matter.

So here's what my experience was like - their site provides an application form. It supposedly has links to instructions on how to fill it up and what size of photo to use and all that. Those links don't open. The form is asking for 35 X 45 photos. Places in US take 51X51 passport size photos.

I called last month and spoke in English - some guy piked up the phone, told me to go to their website, follow the instructions and send the application. And the passport would processes in 2 months time once they've received it.

I found out about the photo size discrepancy and I called again, and this time I spoke in Nepali. Diffrent guy picked it up. Here's what he said
  • A4 size in Nepal is different from A4 size in US
  • If I filled out the form available on the website, I'll never get the new passport. Because of the size issue (both paper size and photo size), the goverment won't approve my application.
  • So the only option - I need to send a paid envelope to them with a letter enclosed asking for a hard copy of the form.
  • They send the form to me, I fill it up and then send it back to them.
  • They send it to Nepal, and it'll come back in 3 months after that.
Is it just me, or is this pretty much the only way of getting my passport renewed?

copy of citizenship will suffice. no need for original hard copy citizenship certificate. even if you don't have copy of citizenship, it doesn't matter. It just takes a little longer because they have to verify your informations from jilla in Nepal.

I have positive things to say about Nepalese embassy in DC
About a month ago I realized my hand written PP expired, so I called the embassy and asked them what is the requirements to renew my PP to get this new MRP, also Since its already been expired do I have to pay fine? The guy on the other side of the phone told me that I need to do it ASAP but there is no fine of any nature and he started telling me about the paper size, photo size, even asked me if I need any paper mailed to me, Since one of my friend just renewed his PP and I knew he has the correct size paper, so I declined his offer. The guy was very nice.
I filled out the form, got a copy of my nepali nagarikata along with the money order and old PP and went to Fed ex, Fed ex opened an account for me so that Nepalese embassy can send me the MRP back once they received from Foreign Ministry in Nepal. After 3 days I called back to see if Embassy received my expired PP. The guy on the other side told me that they received my PP. He told me that they send the collected passport package to FM in Nepal every other week and if we need anything from you someone from embassy will get hold of you. He also told me that I should receive my MRP in 2-3 month. I have not heard anything from them and it has been little over a month and hopefully I will get my MRP some where in mid Feb...

Bottom line is the guy was very polite and positive about giving me all the information that I needed.

I received my new MRP passport last month. The person with whom I contacted through email was very helpful. They even sent me A4 size application form to my address. I filled that out and followed other guidelines as mentioned. The process was very smooth. If you send old passport and citizenship along with the application, the process becomes quick.

Feels like all the more reason to give up nepali passport and apply for amrikan passport upon eligibility. Atleast one does not have to feel indignified at the hands of his own countrymen after that.

Looks like it is time to let the ambassador know what we are facing. Hope he does something about it:

My experience with PP renewal from Nepali Embassy in DC was pleasant overall. My communication with the Embassy was entirely through email (except once when I made a phone call), and it was nice. I got quick response from them whenever I emailed them. Here's what I did for PP renewal:

1. I bought A4 size paper from amazon and printed several copies of the application (filled) although they ask for two copies. I did that because the box for "lyapche" is too small and if you are not careful it will be touch the margin (and they might make you refill the application).

2. I did not send the original Citizenship certificate, but just the copy. Although they say it will take longer, but I received my passport in exactly 10 weeks from the day I sent the application for renewal.

3. I took the picture at home, printed at walmart (2" x 2") and sent them in a ziplock bag. I let it to them to cut the pictures to the size they require.

4. For money order they say that it should be valid for at least one year. The money order I sent was valid for only 90 days and I didn't have any problem.

5. I went to FedEx and they opened an account for me. I printed the return slip put it with all the documents and sent in FedEx reusable envelop so that I don't have to send an extra envelop.

Currently, I am going through the same process. I emailed them and received a application package. Followed the instructions and sent it to the given address with a paid envelop through usps. I even called the embassy to know the status of my pp. A lady answered my call and checked my pp status. She was nice, I have to admit. It have just been 1 month I sent my pp. I am waiting on my new pp back. Let's see what happens..

Please correct me if I am going to do anything wrong.
1. Will print a passport form(for electronic passport) from the website of Nepal embassy in DC)
2. will take or make a passport size picture and attached it in the form, will have औठाको छाप
3. Gonna Include original passport and nepali nagrita and send it via UPS or FEDEX in 9”x12” envelop or the envelop embassy people has requested.

Things making me confused:
---------------------------------
- Printing A4 size paper from amazon
Can't we print the form in the office. Why do we need to get the A4 size paper from amazon.
Isn't the paper that is available in office a A4 size? how do we figure it out?

Regarding photo, I understand what sparty did is a smart idea.

Sojhoketo,

"Can't we print the form in the office."
Yes you can and that's what I did.

"Why do we need to get the A4 size paper from amazon."

Because we use letter size paper here in the US.

"Isn't the paper that is available in office a A4 size?"

No if  you are talking about office in US.

"how do we figure it out?"

Google it. That's what I did.

Hope that helps. And good luck.

Sparty,
Thank you for the valuable information.
yes I am talking about the office in US. It means the paper available in office in US is letter size and Nepal Embassy requires A4 size. I didn't know it. :)

Do you have a link for getting A4 size paper from Amazon. I just want to get couple of it if that's applicable.

Thank you once again.
Appreciated it.

Cardinal has given the link for the paper that I bought. Unfortunately we have to buy a ream of 500 sheets. When I bought it was around $6 and now it is almost $9.

One more point, while printing make sure the printer setting is set to "A4" and not "letter size" which is by default.

I had applied for passport renewal in late March. Its been two months now and I have not received my passport yet. I wonder what the turnaround times are these days. Anyone with experience lately?

@ Sparty. Thanks for the response. I am approaching 10 weeks mark and am getting restless. Did you just wait for the passport to arrive at your door or did you contact embassy. I have not contacted the embassy since I mailed my passport and I am completely in the dark regarding what the status of my renewal is.

Even if you contact the embassy, their response will be "your application is being processed at Kathmandu".
You just have to wait and one day suddenly a packet from embassy will arrive at your door. That's it. I signed up for alerts for the tracking number so I knew when the passport was mailed to me from the embassy.
I can understand the restlessness, but we have no means to check the status online.
