Hey everybody,
lets start a thread about any experiences and stories on how your life as a IT consultant started and how it ended up and if not ended up then how its going and all the whole nine yards. I'm thinking of joining a similar field and wanna know how it is out there for IT consultants.
I've heard of some dajusbhais didisbahinis doing pretty good and some not even getting a project yet.
But lets hear some from you.

pretty interesting talk going on in this thread! being an IT professional for the last 5 yrs, i must say most are going thru the same stuff we all have gone thru in the past. well, i have something to tell you.... don't panic. the best thing to do is seize the opportunity. there is no guarantee in anything in life and IT consulting/H1B is no different. once in IT, you will have to adapt to the changing times. with outsourcing and all, things are not the same anymore. you gotta understand that not all IT professionals are programmers. there are many aspects to IT and if you have a business background, can move up the ladder.

there's no way to tell which consultancy is genuine and which is not. at best you can consult friends. don't go by what's posted on the internet. for H1B holding purposes, there are many IT pros who have different companies holding their H1B. try and consult them. you need to take the chance. just try to make the best deal and move on. after a couple of yrs, you will find out for yourself. more you learn, the better experience you will have.

about business analyst and SAP trainings - all these trainings are worthless if you can't LIE. i did one. did it help me? NO! was i able to get a job? YES. did i get a job based on the training? YES and NO. it all comes down to how well you can present yourself. don't go for these trainings if you are from a different background. for e.g don't take an analyst training if you're a programmer 'cause you'll probably not be able to LIE in the interview. be prepared because after these "trainings" you will enter the workforce with "6 yrs of experience" and a resume to prove that. but you will get jobs if you can back that resume. it's not impossible but takes some guts. the bottom line - if you can talk really well and sell yourself... that'll seal the deal. - midwestdude

Other than the lying part, do you mean Business Analyst doesn't need to have any programming background? What about SAP? Which one involves more programming/coding? SAP or Business Analyst?

Quite_guy ji,
Can you please send me your contact info or direct me to your website where I can get some info. I do know some very qualified IT professionals that are willing to come to the US. Some are based in Australia and some are in India.

Thanks.

kaamde, you're really in this man. you started this thread, right? anyway, i am glad you are serious about your career. what i want to emphasize is that, it's going to be pretty tough to get trained in something that you're not familiar with. i come from a business/IT background and work as a business analyst in orange county. i don't mean to brag about what i have achieved in my life but i have worked my way up. i've fallen flat on my interviews but i have learned something from it all. i stuck to my background and worked my way up. i don't think its wise to switch backgrounds because you've already spent so many yrs of your life in school. to answer your question :- i don't have much knowledge about SAP. you can google and find out. but as a business/systems analyst you don't code. you're a liasion between the business and developers. you work with project managers to get the application developed.

Midwestdude:

I am planning to go for Business Analyst job because i feel i can do that. I do not have strong IT background but have strong business/finance background. Do you have any suggestions in terms of consulting agencies? I have heard that many will not help get jobs. I do not mind going through good traning as long as they provide good jobs. Please advise.

Has anyone worked with solutionone (http://www.solutionone.us/sapience/)? Its a consulting company based in Chicago? If anyone has worked with this company can you please let me know how they are in terms of training, average bench time, pay, and treatment to employees? They say that they are like a staffing company and that they will place you through other consulting companies.
I'd really appreciate your help.

Why is Mr. Quite Guy so interested to find out what company Mr. Upadhaya is recruiting too, I think he's trying to find the name of that company so that he can recruit his own employees to the same company as well!!!

First off, talking about phony! the whole idea of LYING on your resume to get a job is wrong, so you guys are looking for honest people who will help you LIE.... that's fu*king hypocritical!!!!

As far as I know Mr. Upadhaya is a student working at gas stations but was 4.0 in college and has struggled his way to make it to the top. He is one of the most paid Nepali in the US, and a respected person......

Ofcourse if you make a lots of money, there will be a lots of people jealous of you and trying to create a bad impression, but he used to work in sales, so if can bargain, then negotiate with him.

I like the fact that he is recruiting people from Nepal, it gives a broader range of people to come to the US, I have a lots of Indians who are in their late 30s and 40s who recently came to the US as consultants...... I wouldn't want to hire any Nepalese in the US who don't have jobs!! The reason they don't have jobs is because they cheated through college...... either because they partied too much or worked long hours instead of studying.... Students who have been in the job market know how tough it is and don't take things for granted......

If you don't want to try your luck with Mr. Upadhaya, post your resume on dice.com and you will hear from plenty of Indian consulting company in New Jersey, better luck trusting those bastards....

I know some of you guys have crossed the sruggling phase but for us, it seem a huge mountain at this time. I really do not know what to do.

I would really appreciate one suggestion - i would like to make a career in Finance in future, i am not really interested into 100% IT work, but initially to get a job, need an agency and training in IT. So which option is better for long term career growth - SAP FICO or Business Analyst...please please give your suggestions.

Please give suggestions that is useful.

sheetalb:

as a business analyst in IT, you are expected to assist in application/system development along with the managers and developers. since you are not from IT why do you want to pursue this? is it only for H1b? my advice for you is - if you're not interested in an IT career, why don't you go for an MBA? there is a separate H1B quota for advanced degree and it might be a bit easier to get a job after the masters. i know it's tough to maintain status....believe me, we've all been there at one point of time.

if H1B is your only goal at the moment, you might want to try and consult a few of these indian consultancies advertising on sulekha.com. but just be aware, do this as a last resort because they WILL promise you big things which will never happen. they will try to rip you off and if you do get a job, you will receive only 1/3rd of the billing rate... maybe less. it's all about the money!

I think Mr Pritesh is self-praising himself. user G_P_Koirala and ITguy both are him and has been trying to get business info out of us here and self-promoting.

This should be complained both to US Embassy in Nepal and India and to his employer.

Quite_Guy
You are really one suspicious guy with a strong khutta tanne attitude. Most of the posts here have been by genuine people looking for advice on how to get good jobs but you are the only one hell bent on a personal vendetta.
