the orange is simple
lets say if A sold each orange in one rupee then he got 100 rupees,
then B sold his oranges at 1.25 each and collected 100 rupees
similarly C sold at lets say 1.66 per orange and collected 100 rupees

and so on

or is it that i misunderstood the question

Is it this way?

lets only consider two sons, with 100 and 80 oranges.

A sold 96 atr 0.5 and got 48rs. And 4 atr 1 to make 4. total 52rs.
B sold 56 atr 0.5 to make 28rs. 24 atr 1 to make 24. total 52.

Maranchyse answer won't work for 40 and 30 case. The the idea is rite.

This is my answer

First shift: 11 oranges @ 1 Rs

person no. sold money collected no. remained

A(100) 99 9 1
B (80) 77 7 3
C (60) 55 5 5
D (40) 33 3 7
E(30) 22 2 8

Second Shift: 1 orange @ 1 Rs

person sold total money

A 1 9+1=10
B 3 7+3=10
C 5 5+5=10
D 7 3+7=10
E 8 2+8=10

This idea works for any number multiple of 10 and less than or equal to 100.

A ten-volume encyclopedia is arranged on a bookshelf - each volume has 1000 pages. If a bookworm starts eating the pages from the first page of volume 1 and stops when it eats the last page of volume 10, how many pages does it eat? Assume it eats all the pages in order and ignores the covers.

The answer is 8004.

slowpoison was on track. when page 1 is eaten, so is page 2 on the other side. same with the last page, you gotta count the 2nd last page as well.

8004. first two pages of volume 1. all the pages of volumes 2-9 and then last two pages of volume 10. (imagine the volumes on a bookshelf from left to right).

Here's another one:

You have one 4-minute hourglass (or sandglass) and another 7-minute hourglass. How do you measure 9 minutes using these two?

1. Start both hourglass until 4-min glass hourglass gives the full reading.
Now, time = 4 min. reading remained in 7-hg is 3 min.

2. Again start 4 hg from begining with 7-hg which has 3 min left.

3. After three min 7-hg completes its cycle. In 4 hg there is still 1 min reading is remained. Up to this time total time recorded is 7 min.

4. Start 7 hg glass again along with 4 hg having 1 min reading left.

5. After one min, cycle is completed for 4 hg. Now on the bottom part of 7 hg 1 min reading is remained. Upto here total time is 8 min. 1 more to go.

6. Reverse 7 hg to make 9 min.

You got it right slowpoison.. I'll try to put it in a simpler way:

1. Start both hourglasses.

2. When the 4-min hourglass runs out, turn it over (4 mins gone, 3 mins left on 7-min hourglass)

3. When the 7-min hourglass runs out, turn it over (7 mins gone, 1 min left on 4-min hourglass)

4. When the 4-min hourglass runs out (8 mins gone), turn the 7-min hourglass over (it has only been running for 1 min). When it runs out, 9 mins have elapsed.

Aashish, the questions says each volume has 1000 pages. Anyway the answer is not as simple as X * 1000 pages. Imagine the ten books on a bookshelf, lined up together, left to right.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

The answer would be 10 * 1000 = 10,000 only if the bookworm started eating from the last page of volume 1 (on the outer left) and finished eating the 1st page of volume 10 (on the outer right).

The 1st page of volume 1 is in the inner left and the last page of volume 10 is in the inner right.
