Royalists begin capital flight from Nepal: Report

Kathmandu, Dec 06: Fearful of their properties and businesses being confiscated after the Maoists come to power, members of Nepal's royal family, businessmen and former army officials loyal to King Gyanendra have started transferring their capital out of the country, a report said.

India, in fact, heads the list that include Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Hong Kong, Britain and Belgium as some of the favoured new destinations of Nepal's rich loyalists who are now concentrating on acquiring property or investing in businesses in these countries, Nepali weekly Jana Aastha reported Wednesday.

Gurgaon, a booming suburb of New Delhi, is amongst the places that have seen a rush by buyers from Nepal, many of whom are former army generals or senior officers, the report said.

Followers of King Gyanendra received a rude jolt earlier this year when a public revolt unseated the monarch and the new government of opposition parties said it would take over the property owned by the royal family in excess of the ceiling imposed by the law of the land.

Their jitters increased when landless Nepalis in Itahari in eastern Nepal, rejoicing after the fall of King Gyanendra's government in April, forcefully occupied a substantial stretch of land owned by a royal relative, Suraj Shumsher Rana.

Now there is a rush among royalists to sell their land in Nepal secretly and invest in properties and businesses outside the kingdom, the weekly said.

India comes across as the most favoured destination since a treaty between India and Nepal allows Nepalis to own property in India. Ironically, Nepal's communist parties, including the Maoists, have been pressing for the abolition or review of the treaty.

Among businessmen looking for safer investments abroad are leading industrialists from the Marwari community, it added.

Included in the group of those buying property or investing abroad is late king Birendra's son-in-law, Gorakh Shumsher Rana, the only survivor of the massacre in the royal palace in 2001 in which the king, queen and their three children as well as other royals were killed.

While Gorakh Rana is said to have bought property in London, King Gyanendra's nephews are said to have invested in Singapore, the report said.

The king's former trade partner Prabhakar Shumsher Rana, who fell out with the palace after Crown Prince Paras insulted his daughter-in-law and assaulted his son, is focusing on investments in Europe, the US and India.

A former army general who was made an ambassador, Prajwal Shumsher Rana, is said to have made investments in India and Belgium.

I watched zee news once about 2 years ago. It seem like a hindi movie or a TV series to me.
It was fun though with some comedy and twist of drama.

I don't see any difference between a bollywood movie and what zee news anchor says.

Sarojji again you got me wrong I was giving you an example of how we Nepalese tend to blow things out of proportion and sorry for misguiding you by giving you my mother's example. When she got married and brought steel and brass utensils in her father's old Russian jeep people thought it was gold and silver, likewise there are more Rana's and Shah's who falsely believe they are Royal than the Royals themselves!!! even though they may be remotely related to the kings family. Regarding the Olympic size pool full of money I guess you may be right if they pour Nepalese currency in it. (as the value is deflating day by day we ordinary people may one day have to carry basket load of money to even go do some grocery shopping!!)So I am not surprised at all whats the big deal???

The agriculture based Nepal had many rich jamindaars the rich soil of the land produced enough grain for its people. and many prospered by doing trade in Tibet and India, and have you heard of the Lucknow loot?? People were very sincere and worked hard and not many were involved in politics but later whoever could not succeed in life became a politicain for instance many gundas and dadagiris all were successful in becoming members of the parliament and even ministers. The khandani rahis did not have to be a part of dirty politics to amass wealth and if we start scutinizing how everyone got their wealth from I think the source will be varied. So live wire you think only those in politics are rich in Nepal right?? I think that is so not true.

buddy dimple i feel pity for you man of your knowledge. so what in next 2-3 generation after us all the people who has earned their money by hook or crook now, are their children gonna be called so callled your "KHANDANI RAIS"? and are you ready to defend them if you live till that very day? i don't think so like wise nobody is khandani. whoever you see rich has a bad past if not him than his fore fathers. and don't tell me i'm wrong ause i can prove you that. so your so called khandani rais are merly a offspring of a blod sucking parasites. if this applies to yourself than it's purly co-incidental.

Don't get me wrong Democratic I surely am not supporting the fact that the Royals should amass wealth at the cost of its poeple dying in poverty. when you talk to the people who have been harrassed by the Maoists can't you see for yourself that they were being threatened to give up their hard earned livelihood forcefully at the cost of losing their lives!!! Are you happy of this kind of exhortations?? Nobody in my belief has the right to fill their pockets with Government funds but I think that is just wishful thinking.

Maoist will also be brought to the justic as we'll take the royals and the royalists. to do this we have to have a strong system. a system cannot be created just within a day or two. whenever we look at a strong lawful system we find it take ages to bring it to practise. likewise in nepal we have to start to move foward unlike nowadays youngster who think they are with the time but the fact is that the sun is rising behind their back. we must end a feudal age and look at the democratic sunrise cause world ends at democracy. it's just takes time to reach there but "WE SHALL OVERCOME"

Dimple you are in favor of a system which believes that one family is GOD and can do whatever the heck they want since they are above the law. They have encroached upon the Nepali people for hundreds of years, abusing their power and position to amass untold wealth, misusing government resources all this time.

Noone should be above the law and they better be ready to face the law.

It's true that Maoist extortion sucks but it's the Royal attitude of being above everyone else that gave birth to the Maoist in the first place. If we can put the Royal family where it belongs , although it took hundreds of years, then we can take care of the Maoists in due time.

Saroj

Blaming the king for the birth of maoist is like blaming pakistan for the earthquake in india.

It had been 4-5 yrs after 1990 movement that maoist stated their movement and they flourished in to their full potential when the political forces are running the country.

This is not the problem of you only, but majority of nepalese masses just blow with the wind. They dont have the ability to see things as they really are. Dont see things through the eyes of other people. see for youself

Well said doofy I agree with you 100%. As for regarding our king as God is just symbollic I think just as we have been able to worship the cow, monkey, mouse, bull, dog, snake etc. as God what harm do you see in worshipping a human as God too?? aren't we as humans more superior to the animals?? We are appreciating their contribution in our lives and respecting them for it and worshipping is a way of showing our respect for them. As you are educated you should learn to widen your horizon and look beyond. Our ancestors literally did what was told to them and lack of education took them to the extremes. Today everyone thinks they know everything and because of that attitude there is so much chaos and hatred among ourselves. for me worshipping is a way of expressing love and faith, we did that by calling them Bhisnu Avtaars and treated the king like the father of the whole nation so that we could flourish under his supervision.

yea Dimple i agree with you too. Look at the developed nations like japan, england they still have kingship. they felt that monarchy was necessary for them. I hope its not because they were illiterate. its because it was part of their histroy and that symbol is always necessary when the country is in crisis.

monarchy is necessary because its part of our history. it is true that we should point out their mistakes and make them democratic.

i hope nepalese understands this in time or else they will be making the biggest mistake.

Doofy Maoists began because the great Bishnu avataars were ignoring the rest of the people and only concerned with expanding their riches. If the king was deserving of any respect he would not encourage the feudalistic society where he was on top of the pyramid. Because of their feudalistic thinking, they didn't give a rats ass to other parts of Nepal and the other castes of Nepal which were behind because of the classes of people that the Royals encouraged in order to be on top of the food chain and rule over the mass through their power and money.

The only people who still want the King are the people with slave mentalities who are akin to a pack of wolves who hang around the lion king in the jungle for hope of scoring some food left by the Lion King.

Problem is not with Saroj.

Let's be clear of one thing. Whether you agree with Maoists or not, this uprising would not have occurred if those in power have done their duty and not neglected the common citizens.

And who has been in power for last 250 or so years? Royals.

They took and took and took, until people could not give anymore. Desperate people take desperate measures.

Maoists took advantage of that desperation.

But it is the Royals who created that desperation.

Now some of you will say, what about the party leaders? Aren't they corrupt? Did they not thrive in this environment of corruption?

Yes. But compared to 250 years of Shah rule (sure there was 104 years of Rana rule, but Shahs allowed them to rule), a decade and half of political parties rule does not even compare.

Sure the Netas are corrupt, but the system of corruption was created, fostered and sanctioned by the Royals and so called Darbariyas from the time of national unification.

Let's be clear on this.

you have raised the history of 250 years. now let me clear up. if you want to blame the monarchy for the povery and illiteracy in Nepal then you should also have the courage to give them credit for unifying Nepal for 250 yrs without etnic violence or any civil wars before maoist problems. They deserve the credit for the sovernty and unity of Nepal. Its a truth of history.

I agree there is problem is our society and we have all played our part in creating the society that it is. Ask yourself how much part you have played in creating that scoiety. I surely believe every Nepalese played their part.

Every Nepalese has the duty as much as the king, and every Nepaese should bear the responsibility as much as the king for the problem that Nepal is facing. Dont try to hide your mistakes.

saroj
what about the people of Japan and England and other developed countries that have kingship. Do you want to call all of them slaves.
The top of the pyramid represents the Nepalsese society and every Nepalese are part of it.

Communism has failed drastically in many countries and Sarojji thinks we shall overcome with the likes of Prachandra ruling our country. If you have family back home you wouldn't be singing this song. Our family back home deserve peace and stability and having a king with broader perspective doesn't sound like a bad idea. I am happy that doofy seems to be on the same page as me. Have a great weekend guys!!
