Royalists begin capital flight from Nepal: Report

Kathmandu, Dec 06: Fearful of their properties and businesses being confiscated after the Maoists come to power, members of Nepal's royal family, businessmen and former army officials loyal to King Gyanendra have started transferring their capital out of the country, a report said.

India, in fact, heads the list that include Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Hong Kong, Britain and Belgium as some of the favoured new destinations of Nepal's rich loyalists who are now concentrating on acquiring property or investing in businesses in these countries, Nepali weekly Jana Aastha reported Wednesday.

Gurgaon, a booming suburb of New Delhi, is amongst the places that have seen a rush by buyers from Nepal, many of whom are former army generals or senior officers, the report said.

Followers of King Gyanendra received a rude jolt earlier this year when a public revolt unseated the monarch and the new government of opposition parties said it would take over the property owned by the royal family in excess of the ceiling imposed by the law of the land.

Their jitters increased when landless Nepalis in Itahari in eastern Nepal, rejoicing after the fall of King Gyanendra's government in April, forcefully occupied a substantial stretch of land owned by a royal relative, Suraj Shumsher Rana.

Now there is a rush among royalists to sell their land in Nepal secretly and invest in properties and businesses outside the kingdom, the weekly said.

India comes across as the most favoured destination since a treaty between India and Nepal allows Nepalis to own property in India. Ironically, Nepal's communist parties, including the Maoists, have been pressing for the abolition or review of the treaty.

Among businessmen looking for safer investments abroad are leading industrialists from the Marwari community, it added.

Included in the group of those buying property or investing abroad is late king Birendra's son-in-law, Gorakh Shumsher Rana, the only survivor of the massacre in the royal palace in 2001 in which the king, queen and their three children as well as other royals were killed.

While Gorakh Rana is said to have bought property in London, King Gyanendra's nephews are said to have invested in Singapore, the report said.

The king's former trade partner Prabhakar Shumsher Rana, who fell out with the palace after Crown Prince Paras insulted his daughter-in-law and assaulted his son, is focusing on investments in Europe, the US and India.

A former army general who was made an ambassador, Prajwal Shumsher Rana, is said to have made investments in India and Belgium.

while the news may be authentic, isn't zeenews one of the major media to stir agitation among nepalese back in the royal family massacre time, by continuously displaying deep's moustached and bearded pic holding a gun and claiming him to be the culprit, when no one really knew for sure who actually did the killing?

some of these indian media are no less than bollywood movies as far as 'nautankee' is concerned--full of baseless and inconvincing 'masalas' :P

I would not be surprised if the news has some element of truth. It probably is not too far from the truth.

Hmmm... I don't know how credible Zee news is, but the content of the article does make sense.

Royals and Royalists have amassed huge amount of wealth over generations. They have been diversifying their holdings by investing abroad over time, but I can imagine they have increased its pace drastically of late. With most likely turn to Republic come next year, a significant portion of their ill-gotten wealth will probably be nationalized. So it is plausible that they are putting their money away and also fleeing as fast as they can.

The news is not tat far from the real picture I guess...Not just Royalists but Nepalese Bussiness Class like Thakalis, Shakyas do own property outside Nepal....but may be in recent years this tendency has accelerated...but it is TRUE about Nepalese investing in India as well as other Asian & European Countries.. and London & Scotland being the most favorite among all..
However, Indian media ...and their exaggeration ,specially when it comes to Nepal..is always there..

By the way Gorakh SJB Rana was not the sole survivor of the massacre. There may have been quite a few who prospered during the time of the kings but I must dare to say that corruption reached its peak after the declaration of democracy when all the samsads even from the remotest parts of Nepal were owners of pajero jeeps and bribery knew no bounds. That in recent days when raids were carried out cash and valuables were found hoarded in water tanks!!! I think those people were definitely not the Royals or Royalists. Get your facts right coz in my belief Nepal has given birth to more Corrupted politicians in recent years than in the days of the Royal regime, I am sorry to say so in contradiction to what is being said because the names that are mentioned were "Khandani rais" and wanting to leave the country which is going to be ruled by terrorists is justifiable wouldn't you and your family want to do the same?? Flee the country rather than live under the atrocities of the Maoists!!!

Dimple you say "Get your facts right coz in my belief Nepal has given birth to more Corrupted politicians in recent years than in the days of the Royal regime"

The right fact is that before the so called 'democracy' the Royals had monopoly on hoarding the cash or let's say loot. The birth of democracy has resulted in the Royals having to share - albiet with a major portions within their pockets, with some other politicians.

Even if you put all the corruption money from the Netas in one bucket, the bucket of the Royals will still be like a olympic size swimming pool.

I hope that sets the facts straight for you.

Sarojji now that is what I call making a mountain of a molehill. You have the typical andaaj of a Nepali and I applaud you for that. When my mom was moving from the old house to the new one some people in Nepal vowed that they saw Russian jeeps full of gold and silverware being shifted which is of-course totally a myth... you have reminded me of the same story. most of the so called rich followers of the Royals are only hing ko talo just namesake rich get it??

Dimpleji, I'm talking about the royal family and you're talking about the followers of the Royals. Since you gave your own example when you were shifting old house to new one, I would assume that you are regarded as royal follower. But no, I'm not talking about followers, I'm talking about the royal family itself and it's olympic size swimming pool full of money.

so dimple, how do u think these "khandani rahis" got their $$$$$$$ from. i am not supporting the corrupt leaders but u are dead wrong to say corruption has increased since post democracy. pahile, a few "khadani rahis" would take all the cake and divide it amongst themselves.. now other who are not so "rahis" have joined the "cake eating frenzy." the rest of the hungry are pissed off because they cannot get in the action. ordinary people have no idea what is going on. rumor mill curns corruption stories, one after another. but no one gets convicted. either they get a clean sheet after exam or they are "khandani rahis." hahahaha

of course cleo, there must be few self made rahis in nepal. i don't mean all rich people have roots of corruption. getting back to the news, although zee is not trustworthy, i will not be surprised if the rich, irrespective of how they accumulated their wealth, are insecured about the maoist and trying to diversity their savings and investment outside of nepal.

Either royalist or who ever is there likes to leave the country in fact. The only people who likes to live in the country are some opportunists and the people who believe in violence. There are very few people who wants to live in the country because they have no options. If you see everybody is tired of the these political games and instability in the country. Only those people who believes that they can spend their entire life doing politics and making free money from donation and extortion claiming that country will make progress in very short time. sabbb BAKAM FUSSE KURA HARU NETA HARU KO.
