to pacify Nepal's so-called religious minorities? Take Tibet for example. Do you all really believe for one second that were Tibetans allowed to practice their religion freely, they would allow Christians to start their missionary work? Hell no. But these people who were allowed to live in Nepal as Buddhists, and were not just tolerated, but respected, want to end Nepal's Hindu status!. Talk about being bad guests. These people are trying to destroy us for their foolish secular agenda. Hindus are a dying bunch already. They just wanna deliver the final coup de grace. This just makes me angry. Simple question, why are there no Hindu nations in the world? There are Buddhist nations, Christian nations, Muslim nations, but at present, there are no Hindu nations. I think Hindus are way too tolerant. We're being pushed to the edge. This is getting a little out of hand. What can we as Hindus do to keep our religion alive and kicking?
Please realize that no matter what you do or say, Nepal is still a HINDU majority. You just can't argue against this fact. No matter how much the census has been manipulated, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that Nepal is predominantly Hindu. However, we Hindus are a dying breed it seems, because it seems that we open people with open arms, and they decide to backstab us. This has happened to us historically.

Sitara,

Religion is a personal matter. I agree with that 100% and thats why you dont what religious group I represent.

What is not a personal matter is with that one sentence of PM Koirala changed the way we look at ourselves. We are no longer the citizens of the only hindu country. We have differed in the ways we raise our kids. I have a six year old. I want him to realize the importance of our festivities. I want him to be able to relate and rejoice the culture that I lived through. I am going to miss that. I lost a sense of belonging with that statement. I lost a part of my roots.

You might argue that we might still be able to practise that. I will retaliate with if thats the case why call it a secular state? Something will change and I dont want people touching things that doesnt affect the normal citizens. Prachanda probably stroked his ego, but a kami is still a kami in Nepal today. To put it in your perspective, there will still be global warming. Like global warming is a culture in the new world, the stamp of a hindu nation and all the "conservative ideologies" that come with it is the culture of my roots. I am not ready to let go of my roots just cuz there are problems in the new world. Global warming might bring you a problem that will kill us from outside in, lack of culture and custom will kill a person from inside out. I have taken my pick.

Another thing that is not a personal matter is when the previous government declared demonstrations illegal there were riots that broke out and when this government does the same, its all fair in the name of democracy. Wheres the democratic practise in deciding something this important to the nation. Have we all lost our marbles? These are the same people who we accused of selling our rivers for their personal interest. I guess, we as a country have a very short term memory. Its a shame but thats our tribute to our nation.

About your last question, I am getting by Sitara. Like I said, I have a six year old. I wanted to tell him about my country and my culture. I wanted to see him grow old questioning the traditional norms we used to follow. I wanted to see him challenge those beliefs for his. I guess I will be missing out on that part of my life. But what I still do with him is that I tell him the history of my country as I learned it. I tell him the great dynasties that ruled the land; from the good old shepards to the shahs. I will tell him about the unification. I will tell him about how newars who lost the battle that day and yet they won the war.

Not to divert from my "to do" list, but I bet you that more than half the leaders that sit in the parliamentary hall in kathmandu today don't even know the year the malla king lost kathmandu to the prithvi narayan shah. My son will know that day, and yes monarchy seems to fade in Nepal but its still shinning high in my heart. Its my job to let it shine high in the hearts of my kid. Thats one thing I will not fail at.

And thats how I am getting by.

Rastabahadur,

Its not sentimental, passion is the right word.
Glory as I talked about is a relative term. If theres a victory theres a definite defeat. As I will be talking about nepal, at the both sides of the battle field will be nepali. So glory will have "unglory" stories. But when we talk about our history seldom do we want to refer to it as an "unglory" one.

seriousguy,

"Hindus are a dying bunch already"
I don't agree to that. Everything is going to be as it used to be, there will be no cow slaughtered or the temples destroyed.

Conversion:
I dont favor conversion also but if the religion because of the discrimination towards groups of people just because they were born into those minority familes, treats them like they were animals, they have every right to convert. All we need is to abolish discrimination and other bad sides of the religion so that they can participate equally like the majority.

" But these people who were allowed to live in Nepal as Buddhists..." Wow, from which country did Budhism start? I hope you know the answer.

Why are you so worried that the Hindu religion is "dying" from the whole world? Serious guy looks like you dont really wear any "underwear" but you are worried that other Nepalese should wear the brand that majority of people are wearing.

Peace.

If hinduism can survive muslim Moguls invasion, the christian british invasion then it will survive regardless of secularism.

only time will tell the consequences of this (nepal being secular now) it could be good it could be bad.
Personally i thnik nepal is overall heading towards progress.

I bet, you didn't learn how to swim out of a book or from just people telling you what to do and how to do. I am sure you actually went to the river and tried it out. I bet you drowned a couple of times or were at the verge of drowning.
Likewise, culture and traditions and are not spectator sports. You have to "drown" yourself in that. Live the moment and be humble in the process. My son is going to miss that and thats my failure as a parent.

Religion is man made THEREFORE should not interfere with Governing a country. There is no such thing as devine intervetion. Religion should stay where it belongs ---->IN THE TEMPLE. Not people's houses, work place, or recreational areas.

The river itself doesnt change Mr. Birader.
I dont want to look at my weakness as something inevitable. If the water in the river changes then its because of pollution and if the course changes its prolly because of erosion. The river remains unchanged. We need to have the eyes and the hearts to see it. I want to be that eyes and heart for my son.
