TechGuy suggested I should start this thread.

Daktar na bhaye ma ke garney?

That's a question that comes on each of our minds. We all could have some minor medical issues--so TechGuy suggested I should start a thread where I could perhaps answer any questions you have. Although I am not a real doctor, I know a lot of doctors, and they all could contribute.

So if you have any minor medical issues that need to be addressed, ask away!

Thanks for bringing the topic of depression up, Sarkozy jee. I am particularly aware of the depression impacting the individuals that come to the United States from a foreign country.

Among Asian-American population like ours, depression is seen either as a psychological disorder, or an outcome of laziness. This is a terrible mentality that needs to be removed. This is because Depression is a real condition and it can happen to anyone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression occurs when the feelings of sadness in a person “interferes with daily life, normal functioning, and causes pain for both the person with the disorder and those who care about him or her. (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/depression/complete-publication.shtml).

The Doctors you mentioned above should probably seek medical attention, especially since they, according to you, are being pulled into the dependence on drugs. But the thing is, they would not go by themselves, because of the poor attitude that says “Depression bha ko manche bahula ho.” So if you, or anyone you know, is showing symptoms of depression, you should probably talk to them to maybe go see the doctor, because depression CAN be removed with proper medication and care.

Here are the symptoms of depression according to the NIMH Article:

  • Persistent sad, anxious or "empty" feelings
  • Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness
  • Irritability, restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
  • Fatigue and decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
  • Insomnia, early–morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
  • Overeating, or appetite loss
  • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
  • Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment

If there have been attempts at suicide, or talks about it, please PLEASE PLEASE act upon it. Being a good friend is letting your friend live, and not see them die because you did not tell anyone that they were going to commit suicide!

Hope this helps. I’m a mauri ko doctor, so I can only do so much. But I’ll do my best.

Sarkozy asked:

I’m sorry I can’t stop your bleeding from afar, Sarkozy.

Improper brushing technique traumatizes gums and can cause bleeding. However, gums that bleed regularly could be a sign of gum disease (or the risk of having one). There is a thing called plaque that forms regularly in your teeth. Bleeding occurs when this plaque is not removed properly. This can lead to a condition called gingivitis, in which your gums are going through inflammation.

You should maybe look into visiting a dentist one of these days. I am bad with this too, but seeing a dentist at least once every 6 months is a very good suggestion. From a personal experience:

I used to chew my pen a lot. This is unsanitary and also terrible for your teeth. This is because the brushing of the hard surface on the teeth leads to loss of enamel layer of your teeth—which is the protective layer. My tooth chipped by about 1/8” and I freaked out! It was crazy…now I have a rough surface on the tooth and I still am not adjusted to this (although this happened like a year and a half ago!!). Needless to say—I stopped chewing pens!

Jokes/Anecdotes aside, you should really look into going to a dentist. If you cannot afford one, you can always go to a nearby University Hospital. You will receive Dental students, but they are guided by the Professor, so it won’t be bad at all. These students have worked hard to get into the system, so they will work hard towards your well being as well.

David Werner's 1977 book called "Where There is No Doctor: A Village Health Care" was widely available-- with Nepali translation during the late 70's. It was called "Doctor Nabhayema". It was a fantastic book. You might want to have a copy of it, but I'm not sure if it is still available. My father used to use that book big time, because he believes in natural herbal or "ayurvedic" medicine.

Those are amazing resources. I recommend WebMD--but just like everything, be smart about the choices you make based on WebMD or my advice for that matter.

In another thread, Virusno1 asked:
I have a dry eyes problem. Can anybody suggest what to do in this situation? any medicines.?

The causes of dry eyes can be very broad. Sometimes the tear film of the eye can get dry because of air conditioning, heat, and other conditions that are purely environmental. Menopause can cause it too, and so can birth control pills.

Protection against dry eyes?

You I agree with the people that had mentioned the artificial teardrops. You can go to Walgreens or CVS store to get it over the counter. However, not all eyedrops are the same for all people. So you would have to try out different kinds. You may want to change the moisture setting of your room too. Maybe get a humidifier.

Also, Virusno1--if you problem persists even with those methods are used, and it brings sharp pain, I would suggest going to the doctor.

Sarkozy

I aint dentist AND not a profesinal advice.....but you can try this..floss ur teeth twice nicely and that might stop bleeding and pain..

sometimes food get stuck in between teeths which hurts and make you bleed...also brushing cannot reach in between two teeths and deeper inside soo..you might want to try flossing ur teeths....(dnt just use tooth picks but floss threads are good)....Flossing also help grow ur gums healthy and good...re...

I got this frm dental hygienist...also if it hurts bad try nun pani le kula garnu....(dnt knw why but thats like universal medicine)

Disclamer:this is for minor bleeding dat occurs once in a while NOT a professional advice and wont be held responsible for any harm or accident occured while doing this activity.

Piranha jee, I completely agree with you in terms of flossing. We could be brushing our teeth twice a day and using Listerine. However, there is food and other particals that get lodged between teeth. This junk is called tarter, and over time it causes builtup. Thus, flossing is an excellent thing to do.

Bhakte jee, I'm gonna have to go do some research with doctors to get this answer. The prevention against gout is using iodine-rich salt, which is not a problem in the United States, because most commercial salts have iodine in them. I know that gout is caused by uric acid builtup in joints. The treatment ranges vary.

doctor saheb,
i think u got confused between goitre and gout.Gout has nothing to do with iodine rich salt or iodine at all. Gout is due to the high metabolism rate of proteins. The best way is to take controlled amount of proteinrich substances like meat, cheese and milk produces.Alkohol should also be controlled.(it builds acids afer breakdown).Due to excessive breakdown of purine , more and more uric acid are produced and they start forming crystalls.Due to the hight density of crystalls they start to gather at the lower extremities, specially halux(toe)and joints later on. The formation of uric acid can be inhibitted with medicines like allopurinol. it stops the activity of enzyme called xanthinoxidase.
