Oh Thanks Detroit in routing Yankees. I could not believe when I saw the final score.

Verlander rolls behind Tigers' 16 runs
Righty wins 14th as Detroit takes three of four from New York
By Tim Kirby / MLB.com

Tigers Headlines

DETROIT -- This is how a team gets a roll.

Justin Verlander was dominant over seven innings and the Tigers pounded Mike Mussina and the rest of the Yankees' pitching staff in a 16-0 win on Monday night at Comerica Park.

The Tigers took three of four games from the Yankees, marking the first time Detroit won a series in its last 11 tries. The Tigers last won a series on July 17-19 in a three-game sweep over the Twins. It was also the first time the Tigers won back-to-back games since beating the A's twice on Aug. 11-12.

Manager Jim Leyland said that the easiest way for the Tigers to break out of their August funk was to get good outings from their starting pitchers. Verlander certainly did that on Monday. His fastball topped out at 99 mph, but he also mixed his offspeed pitches in one of his best starts of the season. He allowed three hits -- all of them singles -- over seven shutout innings in earning his 14th win of the season.

The offense backed up Verlander with nine hits and six runs against Mussina by the end of the third. Brandon Inge and Curtis Granderson each had an RBI double, and all but two players in the starting lineup had a hit off Mussina, giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead after just three innings. Mussina was done after three innings and 72 pitches.

The Tigers also roughed up the Yankees' bullpen after Mussina exited. Sean Casey hit his first triple in more than three years. Casey's triple off Sean Henn in the fifth was his first since Aug. 13, 2004, a span of 417 games.

The Tigers scored eight runs off Henn in all and tallied at least one run in each of the first five innings. Inge hit a three-run double in the Tigers' six-run seventh.

The 16 runs were the most the Tigers have scored this season. It was the highest-scoring game for the Tigers since they scored 18 agains the Twins last April.

AX

Even Bosox looses three games they will still be five games ahead and elimination number will be 23.

Dice- K is quite unpredicatable and gets no run support.

Lets see how Pettit fares tomorrow in game 1.

I can feel the play offs in the air already.

FEW Head lines

Mussina's owes continue....
Mussina offers Yanks no relief to struggles...
Mussina shows no progress in rout...

DETROIT -- Mike Mussina's rhetorical question, in discussing his previous struggles, was to ask, "Who are they going to replace me with?" The Yankees may just need to answer it.
Mussina was hit hard for the third consecutive start, surrendering six runs and making an early exit from the Yankees' 16-0 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park on Monday.

While the Yankees were down early and stifled by right-hander Justin Verlander, who allowed just three singles over seven shutout innings, Detroit saw Mussina for the second time in three starts, and it wasn't pretty. Mussina allowed nine hits in three innings; his last three starts have produced 25 hits and 20 runs (19 earned) over 9 2/3 innings, a 17.68 ERA.

Most everyone in the Tigers' order got pieces of Mussina through the first three innings. Detroit scored just one run in the first, but the damage could have been much greater, as Curtis Granderson was cut down at home plate on an unorthodox 5-4-2 fielder's choice and Melky Cabrera made a terrific running catch in deep center to haul in a Carlos Guillen sacrifice fly, likely saving two runs.

It mattered little, though, as Mussina's difficulties in containing opposing lineups continued. In the second inning, Granderson stroked a hit that eluded the grasp of Cabrera's dive for an RBI double, and Placido Polanco followed by zipping a ground ball up the middle for another RBI. Detroit tacked on three runs in the third inning as Ivan Rodriguez, Ryan Raburn and Brandon Inge all contributed RBI singles.

Polanco greeted reliever Edwar Ramirez with a solo home run, his eighth, leading off the fourth. Sean Henn surrendered nine runs (seven earned) in 2 2/3 innings of relief, including a three-run double to Inge in the seventh. The loss sealed a 2-5 road trip to Anaheim and Detroit for the Yankees, who will open a three-game series with the Red Sox on Tuesday in New York.

shirish dai, Thanks for those read :=) Last 2 games he has been horrible... seem like time to bring back Japanese import back to Major again...... Yankees brass made a huge mistake resigning him... they should have invest that money to Posada or Rivera

I am not surprised you are already counting elimiation No :=) had a morning talk with the most optimistic BoSox fan, he is already ialkng who them are going to meet in ALCS.

aafno_maanche, I won't mind Wild Card with their record now.... Wild Card Teams seem to better looking at last 5-6 year record..... And I thought no ALDS from same division....

I would love to see Yankees playing BoSox be it ALCS or ALDS. It's a different treat then Yankees playing Angels, Indians or Tigers.

they should DH Damon, play Giambi @ 1st

Ax
For last few years my favourite player in the Yankees lineup was MOose, just because he was reliable.
Now he is the most annoying player. He is so delicate, if you make him pitch without his 5-7 days rest he will pitch horrible. He has been struggling in his last few starts at a crucial time, and he simply stinks right now.
I am hoping he turns his game around toward the end of the season. Sure, we need him to start if we make it to the playoff. But to his question on who we can replace him with, Has he heard of Chamberlain? Next year baby.

Welcome back DWI...I agree with you. It seems the only way you to get back in this forum is talk about NY Sports teams :=) Yes Yankees need to rest Moose. Seems he is throwing everything @ plate... put him on DL and bring back for the end of the season + playoffs if they were to make it... Bring back Igawa... he must be rested well and he has got enuf time to work on his mechanics.... Yankees gotta take one series at a time

I am surprised that Yankees lost the series badly without Tigers bigguns Ordonez not playing well and Shef out....

Yankees betta be ready for RedSuckers from North :=)

RED SOX is cautious...

Red Sox not underestimating Yankees

Team not taking anything for granted in matchup with rival NY
By Ian Browne / MLB.com

"Got to keep playing good. Can't take anything for granted right now," said David Ortiz. (AP)

NEW YORK -- Back on Aug. 19, when the sight of Pinstripes was just about to blur the collective rearview mirror of the Boston Red Sox, all eyes started looking ahead to this three-game showdown between the rivals, which kicks off Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
Here, it seemed, was going to be the chance for the Yankees to get right back into the heart of the American League East race quicker than you could say "1978." You see, on Aug. 19, the 14 1/2-game edge the Red Sox had held on the Yankees on May 30, was down to four games.

But in a span of a week, the Red Sox have once again turned the lead into a cushion. After overpowering the White Sox by a score of 46-7 in a four-game road sweep, the Red Sox have opened their lead back to eight games, following the Yankees' loss to the Tigers on Monday night.

So the team that has led the AL East since April 18 can now go for a virtual knockout.

The Red Sox might well be able to see those mythical ropes. But they're not going to succumb to bulletin-board quotes or knockout predictions.

"I think it's a chance for us to play a good series," said Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell. "I think that's [the media's] job. That's a better story for [the media]."

Manager Terry Francona would have smiled broadly if he had heard Lowell utter that statement.

Cushion? In Francona's mind, that is something you sit on or sleep on. It isn't something that has anything to do with a baseball team.

"That's not the mentality we've ever taken," Francona said. "I don't think that's a very productive way to go into a series. If we were thinking like that, I don't think we'd have the, whatever you call it, cushion or whatever. I don't think that helps you play good baseball thinking like that."

Whether it is the third baseman, the manager or, yes, the captain, you can't get any uniformed member of the Red Sox to openly salivate about a chance to put the Yankees away.

"Like I said in the beginning, we have to worry about us playing our baseball and worry about the quality of baseball we play," said Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek. "We do that, we'll take care of things."

That business approach has gotten the Red Sox this far, so they aren't about to abandon it now.

"Got to keep playing," said Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. "Got to keep playing good. Can't take anything for granted right now."

If it seems like a long time since the Red Sox and Yankees have played, it's because it has been. You'd have to go back to June 3 when Alex Rodriguez beat Jonathan Papelbon with a ninth-inning home run at Fenway.

The rivalry renews with some outstanding pitching matchups. Daisuke Matsuzaka faces off against Andy Pettitte in the opener. Josh Beckett goes up against boyhood idol and fellow Texan Roger Clemens on Wednesday night. Curt Schilling will be opposed by the vastly underrated Chien-Ming Wang in the Thursday afternoon finale.

"Still, it's about quality starts. It doesn't matter who is taking the ball," said Varitek.

But the Red Sox might be about to get an added bonus. Judging by their weekend bashing in Chicago, the bats might be about to go on a certifiable roll for the first time this season.

"That's what you try to do, you try to culminate everything together as the year goes on and then you hopefully start really clicking," said Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew. "It's kind of hard to do that every game for four days. That just shows how difficult that is to do. It's definitely a good way to do it."

The best-case scenario for the Red Sox in the Bronx is a sweep that pushes the lead to double digits.

But even rookies won't talk up that appetizing scenario.

"I don't think anybody cares," said Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. "If we go in there and play well, we're going to be fine. We know they're going to be there in the end. We've just got to play a little bit better than them."

For, as Lowell notes, the Yankees might still have a second life even if the Red Sox do put them away -- for all intents and purposes -- in the division.

The challenge for the Red Sox, should they get in a true comfort zone, might be to ignore all mathematics and just keep playing.

"If we get hot and really explode, that doesn't dampen their spirits," Lowell said. "They're still in it, you know what I mean? That's the beauty of the Wild Card -- they're in it. [You can't] guarantee me that winning the division gets you to the World Series. ... I want to be the team that gets to the playoffs and is hot. You have to be hot. You have to be clicking at that time. You can win 150 games during the season and you have a one-week letdown, your season is over."

One thing nobody can dispute, however, is that the Red Sox will show up at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday as a most confident bunch.

"It feels better to go in there playing the way we're playing," Lowell said. "We're really playing well. We're getting great pitching performances. Swinging the bats extremely well. We're playing good defense. The combination, with our talent, is tough to beat. It's a great feeling."

Strain sidelines Manny: Ramirez says he may miss about 10 games
By Michael Silverman / Red Sox Notebook
Boston Herald Sports Reporter

Thursday, August 30, 2007 - Updated: 04:34 AM EST
NEW YORK - A left oblique strain is a worrisome injury for any hitter, but when Manny Ramirez [stats] has one, it qualifies as a significant injury as well.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a couple of days, it’s more likely to be multiple days” that Ramirez will miss, manager Terry Francona said after last night’s 4-3 loss at Yankee Stadium.

Ramirez told NESN before last night’s game that he thought he would miss approximately 10 games with the injury, and he also told The Associated Press that he guessed it would be around a week. The injury forced him out of Tuesday night’s series opener after he swung for a single in the sixth inning.

The Red Sox [team stats] cannot say yet when Ramirez will return to action, but with rosters expanding on Sept. 1, the team will not need to disable Ramirez.

“He’s one of our big players in this lineup. It’s definitely a concern, but we can’t worry about it,” said first baseman Kevin Youkilis [stats]. “We have to go out there and play our games.”

Ex-Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon, a left-handed hitter, missed 22 games two seasons ago with a left oblique injury.

Dr. Larry Ronan, the team doctor on call, oversaw the examination of Ramirez yesterday afternoon. The team labeled the injury a “strain in the area of Ramirez’ left oblique, which he has been playing with for awhile and that he exacerbated on a swing. He is day to day, and continues to receive treatment.”

The oblique is located on the side, roughly above the belly button and below the pectoral muscles.

On Tuesday night the Red Sox said that Ramirez was removed due to back spasms. An oblique injury hadn’t been mentioned until yesterday afternoon.

Ramirez was in a jovial mood before last night’s game, and moved with no discernible stiffness. As he was walking through the clubhouse with a mouthful of food, Ramirez was asked how his back was. (This was before news about the oblique injury was delivered.)

He gave a smile and a thumbs up. He was then asked if he thought it was an injury that would keep him out for a couple of days.

Still moving and smiling, Ramirez hummed, “Hmmm-mmm,” in the affirmative.

Before the oblique injury was mentioned, Francona said, “(Ramirez) showed up early today. He was pretty sore but he was not worse than he was yesterday.”

Third baseman Mike Lowell [stats], batting .500 over his previous 10 games, hit fourth last night, with Eric Hinske subbing for Ramirez in left field. Hinske batted ninth.
