----------------------------WAKE OF THE WHITE TIGER-----------------

Chapter one.
------------------
"Am I understand that our negotiations with Tibet have failed, well ? Am I.?"
"Yes, Your Majesty".
"They are trying to provoke us?", King Surendra queried of Jagat Jung, the eldest
son of his Prime Minister Jung Bahadur."Most revered Majesy," replied Jagat Jung
after all the disturbances in Lhasa we sent a protest note to Dalai Lama informing
him that our traders in Lhasa had lostover ten million rupees worth of property in
the disturbances but the tibetans have refused to pay more than five hundred thous
and by way of compensation. It's obvious that they are trying to force our hand."
The King turned to the Generals Bom Bahadur and Dhir Shumshere who were standing
nearby, hands folded as if in supplication.
"Somnath has also recently informed us of the unsuccessful negotiations," he remarked.
Somnath was the court scholar and chief pandit. Well versed in Sanskrit and English
he had accompanied Prime Minister Jung Bahadur to England during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Even afterwards, Somnath had tried to persuade Jung Bahadur to reform Nepal's political
set-up and adopt the British Parliamentary system. Consequently, Jung Bahadur, who did not
appreciate Somnath's options att all, debarred himfrom any political involvement whatsoever.

Is this your own translation or is it of Mrs. Greta Rana's? Mrs. Rana's "The Wake of the White Tiger" is an excellent one. FYI, she's the wife of the current finance minister, Madhukar Rana.

The translator is Greeta Rana
--------WAKE OF THE WHITE TIGER----------

Naturally, on hearing that Somnath had already carried tales to the king about the Lasha dispute,
Jagat Jung suspected him of having ulterior motives for doing so.On their part, the generals didn't
pass any comments.
"We don't have that many treaders in Tibet," came the Queen's comment from an inner chamber," so
how on earth could they lose ten million rupees?"
Jagat Jung was usually quick to retort, but this time he was too busy ruminating over the possible
motives of Somnath to be as quick off the mark as usual.
Quickly following up on the Queen's remark, the king commented,"According to Somnath our claim for ten
million in damages isn't resonable coz we can't prove that we've suffered losses to amount to the sum
even of five hundred thousand.
"Yes,the more we think about what he has to say, it does rather make one wonder how our traders
could have possibly lost ten million rupees in what amounts to a set of minor disturbances."
More than ever convinced that Somnath was trying his hand at some sly political interference,
Jagat tried to smooth things over and win the Royal Couple over to his point of view.
"Your Majesty, in claiming this ten million rupees from the Tibetan Government, we are more
concerned with the historical significance of the incident than in what our traders have lost."
"What historical significance?"
"Revered Majesty, it's a long story and by your leave, your Grace allow me the liberty of
saying that we're evading the issue. We came here to discuss one thing and have ended up entangled in another."

I read this book a while ago. I just have some questions about this book. What is the criteria of trusting this book for its containt of historical events. I am not trying to disregard Mr. Daimond S.J. B. Ranas work in this book but have some ......... I am raising this question cuz i met someone with whom i have a chat regarding this book. BTW she is the great granddaughter of the gentleman and it is his memoir Mr. D. S.J.B. has written in the book, according to her.. There is another book also written by Shri Khrishna Shrestha regarding Kot Mascarre who, himself (as claimed by him) is a family tree of one of the person who worked at palace at the current time it occured.

"In the event of a war," the Queen reminded him gently, "many lives will be lost. During the last war with the
British we suffered severe losses both in lives and in finances, don't forget. If this dispute can be settled amicably,
there's no point in going to war. But come, tell us about the historical significance you mentioned"
Just then the boom of cannons could be heared resounding across the parade ground. Twenty thousand troops were
already assembled there in full battle kit, ready to leave the very next day for Tibet. Jung Bahadur was
inspecting the troops and was being given a nineteen gun salute at the very moment that the fate of these
self-same men hung in the balance. Jagat should have been at that parade, his presence was indispensable
in presenting the rank and file with a unified family front and at the sound of the cannons he shifted around
restlessly.
"Come on Jagat, out with it," the King ordered and so Jagat had no alternative but to sit at the King's feet
as bidden and the Generals followed suit.
"Well," he began, "initially the Tibetans used to accept Nepalese currency for all normal business
transactions, then during the period of Your Majesty's great-great grandfather, King Prithivi Narayan, a new nepalese
currency was introduced which the Tibetans refused to accept, placing a great strain on the relationship
between our two countries. A contingent of our army subsequently reached a place called Shikarjong and hoisted our flag
and during the following months a peace treaty was signed, only to be broken by Tibet the very next year and
once more our forces were obliged to fight their way in to Tibet. Our treaty with Tibet has always been favourable
to us, but only because we have been prepared to defend it by force of arms if need be.

what swaati thapa pointed out is quite important...

i have read both "Basanti" and "Seto Bagh" written by DSJBR and "Jungh Bahadur" by Shri Krishna Shrestha.

SKS clearly says that Jung Bdr Rana killed Gagan Singh but DSJBR says that it was some one else (but doesnt say who he is).... Surely, i do respect DSJBR but i think he is trying to cover up the history for his family values.... (heard that he is C class rana though)....

but a great novel to read....
