Nepal Seeks Out Gay Tourism
01.25.05

By Ross von Metzke

(Kathmandu, Nepal) ? In an effort to boost a sagging travel economy, several tour operators throughout Nepal are targeting the gay community.
As tourism has suffered for much of the last nine years under the Maoist insurgency, tour companies have enhanced specialty tourism options beginning with the gay community.

Aashan Nepal is at the forefront of tourism agencies catering to gay travelers, with services ranging from gay guides to booking gay-friendly hotels. The agency has also focused energy on exploring and writing up gay bars and nightclubs throughout the country.

Aashan Nepal owner Bhismaji Pant said he got the idea for focusing on gay clientele while working at a travel agency in Japan and later, during a stint in Bangkok.

?In these countries I found gay clients making inquiries about gay-friendly services and guides and I realized we had no such agencies in Kathmandu,? Pant told a Nepalese news service.

Nepal?s gay community was largely closeted until recently when, in 2000, the government recognized the Blue Diamond Society as the first public platform for the gay community registered with the government. Since, Nepal has seen a growing vibrancy to the gay community, emerging from the mostly traditional, male-centric culture.

Aashan Nepal is the is the official tour agency of the Blue Diamond Society with a large amount of gay clients coming from Holland, New Zealand, Spain and Italy. Additionally, companies like Himalayan Humanity Trekking are working with Aasha and the Blue Diamond Society to format a focus on gay tourism.

Nepal gay group launches journal
By Charles Haviland
BBC News, Kathmandu

Nepal's only gay rights organisation has launched a weekly newspaper, the first publication here of its kind.
The Blue Diamond Society (BDS) says that it wants to give a voice to a range of oppressed communities, not just sexual minorities.

The publication is being funded by the British government.

A British diplomat told the BBC the funding of the project was part of London's campaign to reduce the impact of HIV and Aids.

Budget

The parallel English and Nepali language Blue Diamond Weekly papers are being brought out by BDS, which describes itself as an organisation for sexual minorities, including homosexual, bisexual and trans-gendered people.

BDS has already raised the profile of these communities in this conservative society and its founder, Sunil Pant, says the new paper will focus on all marginalised groups in Nepal whose voices, he says, are never heard.

It will look at the human rights of women and children, dalits - or so-called untouchables - and sex workers, as well as sexual minorities, and will focus on HIV and Aids prevention.

It is being funded by Britain's Department for International Development, which has a budget for small projects like this.

The British Embassy will administer the grant, which must be spent in line with departmental objectives.

The British diplomat said the aim was to help people living with Aids, or at risk of it, to lead fulfilled lives and have greater Aids-related risk awareness. Aids, he pointed out, contributed to poverty.

"When I was about 13 it came from my heart and soul, the feeling that I was different from others," says Manisha, who has the body of a man but wants to be a woman - and likes to be described as a woman.

Manisha, now 24, is what is known in Kathmandu as a "meti" or a transgender person.

"Up to the age of 18 I thought I was the only person like that in the world. I was very depressed."

Crossing sexual boundaries in Nepal
By Charles Haviland
BBC News, Kathmandu

Manisha (r) now works full time for the Blue Diamond Society
"When I was about 13 it came from my heart and soul, the feeling that I was different from others," says Manisha, who has the body of a man but wants to be a woman - and likes to be described as a woman.

Manisha, now 24, is what is known in Kathmandu as a "meti" or a transgender person.

"Up to the age of 18 I thought I was the only person like that in the world. I was very depressed."

That changed when Manisha began meeting similar people in the parks of the Nepalese capital.

It changed even more in 2001 with the founding of the Blue Diamond Society (BDS), Nepal's only organisation for sexual minorities.

The BDS has just launched a weekly newspaper, with editions in English and Nepali.

The Blue Diamond Weekly will give a platform to many marginalised groups in Nepal, but seems likely to be dominated by issues affecting gay and bisexual Nepalese and the significant number who call themselves "meti" and dress up in women's clothes.

An autobiographical article by Manisha filled page three of the first edition.

Manisha now works full-time for BDS, which among other things promotes Aids awareness and condom usage among vulnerable groups.

BDS's founder and director, 32-year-old Sunil Pant, explored his own sexuality while studying in Belarus.

Complex attitudes

Returning from overseas, he wanted to discover more about Nepal's gay culture.

I feel that inside me is the soul of a girl, I never felt I was a boy

Manisha, Blue Diamond Society worker

In Kathmandu he was surprised at the number of "MSMs" - men who have sex with men. Some identified as homosexual but many others did not, for instance those choosing metis as partners.

"The scary thing was the lack of knowledge on HIV-Aids, the low level of condom usage," he says.

Rectifying this was his main motivation for starting the Blue Diamond Society - blue being a "gay colour" in Belarus, the diamond symbolising compassion in Buddhism, one of Nepal's two main religions.

Nepalese attitudes to sexual diversity are complex.

Sunil says most Nepalese - especially Buddhists - are tolerant in this regard. The Gurung people of western Nepal have a tradition of men called maarunis, who dance in female clothes.

The tradition, he says, is also popular in the Royal Nepalese Army.

"Maarunis are recruited to perform dances to entertain within the barracks," he says, adding that they have traditionally had a role in the royal palaces too.

The Society wants to increase awareness of HIV-Aids

"Whenever a general or minister or high-ranking officer has to go out, there will be two maarunis with a jug of water, flowers, and a maaruni standing at the gate for their good luck."

But Sunil says there is hostility, for instance from those he describes as fundamentalist Hindus.

And when metis try to claim equal rights, acceptance wanes and may give way to violence. Some have been subjected to attempted murder; others, he says, to rape and arbitrary arrest.

Still taboo

More encouragingly, after a 2003 meeting between metis, gay men and police authorities, the Inspector-General of Police issued a letter to all police stations indicating concern at the level of such police violence.

Sunil Pant admits that BDS tends to be seen as a meti organisation. He believes Nepalese men identifying themselves as gay are less disadvantaged, tending to have a better education and a secure job.

But others point out that they still face considerable problems.

Maaruni dancers perform at army barracks and royal palaces

"Though homosexuality definitely exists in Nepalese society, it is still not accepted," says renowned film director Tulsi Ghimire, writing in the new weekly.

While neighbouring India is opening up on the subject, in Nepal it is still taboo.

He dare not touch it on screen.

Prakash, a bisexual who works with BDS, agrees that attitudes to homosexuality are "not encouraging".

He was happy to have an arranged marriage last year but regrets he cannot tell his wife all about his sexuality.

With marriage a social obligation, many metis and homosexuals do wed, but others - with great difficulty - tell their families they cannot.

Manisha, who lives with her parents, says she is preparing to do this, as she does not want to "spoil anyone's life" by marrying.

The Blue Diamond Society has unquestionably raised the profile of these minorities in Kathmandu. Its three-storey office is well-known in the neighbourhood and the Society stages parades during religious festivals.

And when Manisha and a friend pose for the BBC in female clothes on the building's rooftop, builders next door scarcely bat an eyelid.

Actually, it was quite an interesting experience for me to see some Nepali transvestites last July. They usually walk the streets at night and get harrassed by police apparently.

Wow, that was the first time I saw gay Nepalis, even in the web. I had never seen one while I was in Nepal. Those transvestites are indeed quite brave to have come out in open like that, despite people laughing and heckling them all around. I had the impression that gay men are bunch of pansy boys, squeeling and being silly. I guess there is much to learn for us heteros about those playing on the other side of the field.

Sitara, forgive me for being stupid, but when you said "they usually walk the streets at night", did you mean they are prostitutes or they just walk at night, taking refuge of darkness, thereby dodging the society's wrath?

I guess these days police harass anyone who walks at night in the name of keeping us safe from Mao-badi. I am sure they get more rowdy when they see a woman walking around. And then even more so when they find the woman is actually a man.

I went through different websites to get insight view of Gay and their roles in local economy. Experienced as a tour operator for certain years, I never had imagined experiencing Gay tourism boom around the world. Presently I am not in tourism industry but I felt really interesting that Gay tourism is gaining its momentum in a fast pace. I hope Sajha viewers will enjoy reading it.

Gay Tourism:-
According to Tourism Intelligence International in 2000, some 10% of international tourists were gay or lesbians, accounting for more than 70 million arrivals worldwide. This market is thus an important market segment and is expected to continue to grow as a result of a change in attitudes to homosexuality.

Gays are regarded as being 'early innovators' and 'trendsetters'. They usually have a high disposable income and no kids - the so called DINKS of the 21 Century. American gay and lesbian tourists for example are estimated to generate $54.1 bn a year - about 10% of the total US travel industry. As a result of the fact that this segment tends to have few family responsibilities they have a large pool of discretionary cash for traveling.

The US market is regarded as being the most important source of gay and lesbian tourists, with the highest levels of disposable of income. It is reported that this market has many specialist segments, which are interested in high value holidays, such as cruising, eco and adventure tourism.

Some Gay and lesbian related tourism organizations:-
New Zealand:- The New Zealand Gay and Lesbian Tourism (NZGLTA) is a professional, non-profit organisation which has been established to assist the gay, lesbian and bisexual traveller by maintaining standards of service and hospitality in tourism related products.

Gay Travelers Shore Up Local Economy :- In the February 2002 issue of Out & About magazine, Fort Lauderdale was declared the next ?gay-vacation Mecca,? overtaking Key West and Miami. And the events of September 11 have not changed that. With more than 10 gay-owned businesses, a good mix of attractions and more than 30 hotels catering specifically o the gay/lesbian market, Fort Lauderdale is considered a gay-friendly destination. Last year approximately 555,000 gays visited the area, spending more than $500 million.

Montreal has a large network of services and organizations for the gay and lesbian community

Gay friendly France: - So close to Britain yet so different. Did you know that France is one of Europe?s top gay friendly-destinations?

Riten ji:

I did mean "walking the streets" as prostituting their wares looking for clients. Apparently Ratna park area is their rendezvou place. There are also Nepali night clubs visited by closet gays/bi- and "metis". A recent protest was against police brutality against the transvestites.

Guys, I am sick of media coverage about nepal.
and more sick to hear such kind of news.
We nepalese learn all the stupid things of the west soon but never look on to the creative things they are doing. You know and the west supplies money and hegemony to broaden the miscarriage of its tattered mordenism.
DFID have hardly funded community literacy program but has funded for this mischievous newspaper highlighting the activities of unnatural sex inhibitors. This will only lead to more bikriti in our society. I am totally against this whimsical gay right activities supported by the corrupt western aid landers. lets oppose this .

Thanks Sitara. There must be market for transvestite prostitution in Kathmandu then. Makes me wonder what the gay population of Nepal is.

newuser, I am not sure if this transvestite phenomenon is something we imported from the West. Haven't you heard of Hijadas in India? I remember seeing them in old Hindi movies. And I am sure you have heard of similar hijadas in Mahabharat.

Anyway, enough about gays. Let 'em be, I guess.

hey man calm down and stop your rhetoric against me. put your knowledge about sex and sexuality in your shelves and stop barking like a mad dog. I am totally against the spread of explicit sexual activities and I dont care if some semi educated poppycocks allege me of being an extrimist or ignorant. If you have too much sympathy for gayism, just carry on with ur job. u know wat i mean? But still that is unnatural, unethical and infidel . Your group is below 1 percent world wide . May be less then 0.1 percent in Nepal just because it is explicitly unnatural.

I feel pity on your assimilation of taliban and me.
All I want is they shud be restricted inside their bedrooms.they r free to do wat they want in bedroom but can't kiss n cuddle and jolt to one another in ratnapark and baneshwor in public. there activities shudn't be allowed to foster in public domain. thats what i oppose of, u silly thug.
u know what? Bin Laden is the illegitimate son of Regan and Thatcher(Maggy) and people like you are the illegitimate son of Bush junior and condy. Democracy is a farce when it's uttered by jokers like u. I don't want to discuss any more with u. bye bye
