hahahh...this has been going on ever since the advent of democraZy. All the netas and hakims got rich while the debts went unpaid...Similar case took place with the RNAC a few years ago! Read somewhere that even the Nepal Electicity Authority owes million of rupees to the Indians (so that is the next fiasco waiting to happen). As far as I know, nothing like this ever happened when the goddamn king was there. Damn netas, filled their coffers and now they expect the king and the janta to fix up their mess! WTF!!

I think all the "inconvenience" that the Nepali Janta is facing due to the fuel shortage, they very well deserve it. I used to be like "WTF??" everytime there was a strike when petroleum prices went up in Nepal. How can people there not let NOC raise petroleum prices when the prices are going up everywhere else around the world?? And the funny thing is, the fugging "Netas" who are supposed to be smart and far-sighted were the ones who led such protest programs and strikes against the rise in petroleum prices. Unless prices are raised, how can NOC pay for what it is buying from the IOC? How can the debts be paid??? And now, they're complaining that the IOC cut off supplies..... yo sabai haami aafaile garera bhayeko..... IOC also has to make sure it is not losing money and thats what they did.
Having said this, I'm not trying to imply that I am an "India-Supporter" as some people here might want to label me as. I'm just trying to be logical about this whole issue.

Daddy seems to be to the point. While Samsara's research on Gyane's misgovernance seems to be far from complete...

Million Dollar Baby, Gyane ruled for a year and a half (with political objection at every step). Tell me how did he mismanage during the last 17 years of democracy?? Your porfoundly sublime analysis is needed as you seem to know the complete picture as per your earlier post.

The government should first probe into (as if it works) the account and properties of GM and high level officials of Nepal Oil Corporation who only think of stuffing their wallets and nothing else.

Samsara wrote above: "...nothing like this ever happened when the goddamn king was there."

I beg to differ. I still remember back in 80's as a kid standing on long lines for hours for kerosene, sugar, water, etc. I do not know whether we had shortage of petrol because we did not have car then. But also, there were less than 25% of today's number of vehicles.

Netas have done very little to solve this issue. And whatever they have done have not been effective to say the least. Way I see it, it is the matter of simple business economics.

The supply has to keep up with demand. Monies need to be paid for the goods purchased. When the supplier is not paid, he will stop the supply. NOC needs to figure out a way to do good business.

On the other end, the people who are suffering from the shortage of petrol are the same people who complain about the higher fuel price and increased bus ticket price. If NOC is to make enough money to pay IOC, then it has to make that money by selling petrol at the price that is sustainable. I do not think people can have it both ways.

I am not sure what the price of petrol is in Nepal. Assuming it is around Rs.70 or $1 per litre, the price of the fuel there is about the same as here in the US, about $3.80 per gallon. And the US has one of the lowest fuel price in the world. If one is to buy the same gallon of gas in Europe or Japan, the cost would be more than twice that amount.

Nepal, not having its own source of oil, is bound to be charged more for it.

Now, there are few things Nepal Government can do about this situation.

1. Put in public money to repay the debt owed to IOC and subsidize heavily to keep the price of oil artificially low. I would think this is a bad idea and not sustainable.

2. Let Adam Smith's invisible hand take its course and allow the price of oil to soar as market dictates. This will work, but lot of poor people will suffer heavily until the market forces equalize.

3. Implement and enforce regulations to curtail the number of private/small vehicles and increase the availability of mass transit. This will reduce the amount of oil consumed and keep the economy rolling.

I would say that it is high time that government look beyond symptoms and actually tackle the cause of this problem. I know it is a lot to ask, given the short-sighted nature of our leaders, but I do not see any other solution.

What say you?

Dear Friends, this was the posting I made on Feb 01, 2007 (ie 4 months ago) under the heading "Nepal's reputation internationally...??? Do we deserve respect???". It seems nothing has changed in last 4 months and the things has gotten worse. Party politics is still busy with their rhetoric about petrolium price and their power politics. So reading the title of this thread, I can just think of one word, "Bhutra ko beijjat"

always wonder why NOC is unable to make the required payment in time when it is simply buying the product, adding its profit and making the sale. When consumers like you and me do not get any credits and make the payment at station, why are they unable to make the payment in time.

Harkey Thanks for ur comment.

Point to be noted: Lamo lamo guff-gaaff Nagarau Sathi ho!!!

Think:

As to how, we can do the best?
What can be next strategy when Chinese Gasoline Products enter the Nepalese Territory so that NOC will not enter into Casino Finance?
How the company can smoothly run?

To all Nepalese:
Can we do our work tactfully and stop blaming others?

The main reason behind this problem is Nepal do not have its own petrolium resources. So it is time for Nepal to start using other sources of energy like electricity, the sources of which are abudent in Nepal. Instead of spending millions of rupees to buy petrolium products, it should be invested in hydro-electric power stations. All the gasoline fuelled vechicles should be replaced by electric vechicles. I know it is not that easy to make this change, but isn't it time for us to start thinking about it. If not then we can never get out of this problem, as we will always need to rely on others for petrolium products.

That is why I call Sajha a window to look at the mind of nepalese abroad. It is sad to know the way these people see the things back in Nepal. Remember those who make fun of it, no matter how ugly a mother is, she is still a mother! Share ideas, not opinions! The saying "diarrhea of opinion, constipation of ideas" truly goes to you ppl.
