“Momo Hamro Rastriya Khaja Ho” and I personally abide by this rule. Whenever I am hungry the first thing that comes to my mind as khaja is “MOMOZZZ”. In that process, I happen to try out momos in many different places. For me, I strongly believe that there are either good momo or bad momo. There is never a so so, ok ok momos. I have listed out 8 places which you can try in Kathmandu and Lalitpur, all in random orders. ( I can never say one place is THE BEST coz some has good sauce and some has good skin). I have not quoted the prices of the momo coz some places, I have visited probably 6 months ago, so the menu must have changed. But I can say that it is not high profile expensive places.

So the list is not in any particular order of taste and preferences.

1. Mechung Restaurant, Boudha – Previously it was located right opposite to the Boudhanath entry gate but now it has moved about 200 meters further more. The old place has similar restaurant but it is run by the landlord, dont get confused( you will hear such chase off stories a lot in ktm...where a restaurant is making money so the landlord wants to run his own show). Driving 200 meter is worth the momos you are going to get there. The momo soup is also nice there and it comes complimentary.

2.Magic Momo, Maharajgunj/Bagmati bridge/Hariharbhawan – I only know these 3 outlets. One right outside Teaching Hospital, another one at Bagmati Bridge bus stop (Thapathali side) and the last one is outside UN office. Since they sort of got a franchisee style...the taste is pretty much the same. Pork momo is my recommendation.

3. Boso rahit Momo, Pulchowk/ Patandhoka –

I am sure there are a lot of Boso Rahit outlets all over Kathmandu and Lalitpur but these two are my favorite. One located at Pulchowk, once you take a turn to go to Hermans Bakery, it is the first shop on the right. You will not miss it at all coz it will be so crowded and people will be standing outside and eating. The next one is at Patandhoka, you cross the gate from the bus stop side and you see a taxi stand and right opposite to it, you will see Baglamukhi Boso Rahit Momo.

4. Tashi Dhelek Restaurant, Ekantakuna – If you have grown up in Lalitpur area, you have not missed out on these momos. Previously, it was on the main street in a yellow house right opposite to the Pipal bot in Ekantakuna, now it has moved inside the lane right next to the previous location. They still serve amazing momos.

5. Tasty Home, Bagdol – If you walk about 100 meter from Tashi Dhelek towards west and reach Bhanimandal chowk, you will see a place called Drop in restaurant. Tasty Home owner used to run that place but again his landlord kicked him out and running that restaurant. It does have good momo but I like Tasty Home better. You cross ringroad and in Bagdol, you see a dingy place ( most of the dingy, not so clean places have good food... I wonder why). That is where u get amazing pork momos. Everything in the menu is nice, one place I love to go often when I am hungry.

6.Dragon Restaurant, Pulchowk/Damkal – This is one of the oldest place that serves Tibetan momos. He was also kicked out by the landlord ( oh lord! I now sound like a lawyer for pidit momo saujees) and now moved to the first floor opposite to Sumeru Hospital, Damkal. It has been couple of years he has been there. Good momos and chowmein and dont forget to ask for the chilly sauce.

7. Suimai Restaurant, Hardic Fitness Complex, Pulchowk/ Teku – So now the brothers has seperated, You get suimai momos in two different places. One is still in Teku, very close to National Trading Complex (which is apparently closed for renovation and its been a while, but the buzz is they are starting it big). Another brother got his restaurant inside the fitness center in Pulchowk. Both are pretty similar and you get a variety of sauces. It is very unique as the skin are not closed but just sticked at places.

8.Zaika Cafe, Thamel – Last but not the least, Zaika Cafe in Thamel. From Hot Bread junction, take the lane towards Kathmandu Guest House, pass that, on the right you across New Orleans and on the left you see Northfield Cafe and right opposite to that, there is a small lane, you go 10 meters and on the left you see Zaika Cafe ( woaahhhh!! it is like a treasure hunt). Try the buff momos there. It is a nice place to chill with your friends.

SOOO these are my 8 places out of dozens where we get good momos. I am sorry, for me momos are purely non veg. I dont like to try veg momos. I feel it is an insult to the whole clan of momos. Anyway if you have any other recommendations please comment and let me know. I would love to go and try it after Tihar. Do let me know your verdicts on my choice of momo places.

Happy Tihar everyone!

P.S. Nas jyu welcome back to Sajha!!!
