The Dictator that almost was.

About a year ago, or perhaps two. I had posted a thread commending the deeds of CIAA and thanked Lokman Singh Karki for his work thus far. I believe it was Rahulvai who cautioned me, suggesting to look into the tainted past (his hand in suppressing the people war) of Mr Karki. He even mentioned his first hand experience with Mr Karki I believe. I started looking at the chief of CIAA with reserved optimism.

It didn't take too long for the optimism to erode after seeing small fish getting arrested and harassed and sharks floating freely. Then came Dixit story as well as Dr KC's claims. More and more it became apparent that the chief of CIAA was exercising too much power for his personal good. If Nepal was heading into dictatorship, the fear didn't come from Gyanendra/Paras Shah, it came from the man himself: Lokman Singh Karki.

A friend had mentioned that Mr Karki holds key information about top political leaders, including Prachanda and he might be using these leverages to create his personal influence. It wasn't a blackmail, more like I will help you, you will help me.

However, there might be silver lining to this story, light at the end of the tunnel. Lokman might be on a hot seat. After getting the ridiculous response that the file for cabinet's briefing on Lokman's appointment was lost in earthquake, Supreme Court has rejected the response. They appear to have agreed to analyze his appointment which technically hadn't met the requirement set for the chief of CIAA, and on that ground he might be declared not fit. Sure this could easily be dismissed if those with power pull the right chains, but hope has emerged that justice might prevail.

His latest stunt, threatening to drag Maoists to interrogation regarding the financing irregularities of Maoist camps over a decade ago, suggest that the "conspiracy theory"'my friend had postulated might have some truth to it. Perhaps he didn't get enough support from Prachanda so now he wants to drag the whole party with him, or is threatening to do so if he is not rescued.

It does seem we might get lucky and avoid being ruled by another dictator with absolute power (even party leaders don't have that much power); but I don't want to be too naive. I am well aware all these stunts will fade away, The powerful will remain with more power - because as they say, change won't happen because those with power don't want the change and those who need change don't have the power. He might remain the most powerful person in Nepal.
