I think he said he is Pakistani.

Last time I said don't do certain things (like reaching out to pocket) in presence of a cop unless told to do so, and heard tonnes of criticism here. I still say, it is best to not do those things and get into the argument with a cop. What the passengers did, even what the driver did, was appropriate. This is how to deal with cops.

Having said that, what the cop did was completely unjustified. Sure people say one rotten apple stinks the whole policy academy; but the problem is systematic. Many Cops get into this power trip from the beginning of joining the unit. There are many good/great cops who are patient and use their power for the good of the people - but many feel that they are above the law. Policy union tries to defend these cops but they fail to address the main issue: recruitment and overall approach. Many times people who want to be a cop are the ones who want power to suppress others. These kind of people should be systematically filtered out. Second, overall approach should be changed to establish the mentality that cops are there to protect the civilians - not to supress them.

Until the systematic change takes place, Video recording is the only and best way to slightly even-up this unblanace equation.
