I was in a similar situation couple of years back. I was hit by a semi when I was travelling from MD to MN and the accident occurred in IN. I got the report number from the officer the same night and called my insurance and gave them that information. The next day, the adjuster from that semi company came, met me and tried to spit words out of my mouth that in some way I was responsible too. So, think and choose your word wisely when you meet the adjuster from their company and a tip (you were not in cruise control if it was freeway).
As for the question, you should have a valid receipt so renting your friend's car don't count as you will be paying taxes and stuff on the rental. I was refunded 3 days hotel in IN, food for those 3 days, rental for 3 weeks as I traveled back to MN and came back to pick up my car and gas during to and fro IN-MN. So, yes, you should be refunded for any expense that was due to this accident.
