The D5000 is a fantastic camera but I can understand it's limitation.
With your budget and your goal - I would suggest you go with D7000 which is by all means as good as the new full frame D600 but for fraction of the cost. And invest the remaining balance on some good glasses depending on your need. For me, the camera is only as good as it's lens.
