Although first cousin marriages seem incest, some ethnic groups practice it as their “Gotras” are different. “Gotra” means clan which broadly refers to people who are descendants in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor.

Call it male chauvinism or sexual discrimination, the Gotra is inherited from a Father. The mother’s Gotra is simply ignored. In short, Boy belongs to Clan ‘A’ while the girl belongs to clan ‘B’. Since they are from different clans their marriage is approved.

It’s true that the children of first-cousin marriages have an increased risk of genetic disorders. Inbreeding can make children more susceptible to infectious diseases. But it is ironic that the man who gave rise to the importance of genetics in natural selection; Charles Darwin chose to marry his first cousin. Well Darwin wasn't alone in this - Einstein also married his cousin.
