I think this metaphor tells a lot about love and how love lights the way for someone in love.

The story is skillfully written. If this was written in a third person narrative, readers would come away wondering what all happened during the protagonist's life with her husband. 

But the good thing is that the story is being narrated by the protagonist herself, in first person. This first person narrative in the form of a letter is the strength of the story because the protagonist is writing in reminiscence and  the details of her life spent with her husband is skillfully left to reader imagination.
