@mancini....That's a wonderful question!

Brahmacharya is a very broad term and mostly misconstrued by many people. When we talk about Brahmacharya, people usually translate as a celibate life. While celibacy is part of Brahmacharya, celibacy itself is not whole of Brahmacharya. A strict celibacy is prescribed for people who are single and want to live a sannyasi life. However, strict celibacy is not possible for married people. For those who are married, moderate path is prescribed. Now, a question may come, what is moderation? This moderation may differ from person to person. For example, a person who is engaging in sexual activity with his/her spouse every single day, moderation would be once a month or perhaps once in a two week. For a person who engages in sexual activity once a month, for him/her moderation may be once in a three month or once in a six month. The idea here is to move gradually in the path of Brahmacharya and reach a point where you want to engage in sexual activity with your spouse only when you need children. Again, Brahmacharya is a gradual process through the path of moderation for married people.
