Agree about haribansa - he is a phenomenon and I loved some of their TV series in the 90s.

Regarding Actress, i think of Nisha Sharma, Anshumala Shahi (I am also in mid 30s) and some of the like - they were so good in some of the TV serials (i have not watched a movie acted by them though).

Back then they used to produce really good TV show like 'Bhiddekhi Bhid samma, Gurans eki palta phulcha, Rupmati, etc and they were real good classic with Nepaliness presented very well. I really wonder why things like those not produced anymore.

Cameroon Diaz as favorite actor..wtf.  Good thing no one has mentioned Ashton Kutcher so far.  Well I guess it's all about personal choice. Here are some of my favorite actors by the movie.

Male:

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption.

Russell Crowe in The Insider, Gladiator and Beautiful Mind.

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan.

Dicaprio in The Aviator, Departed and Gangs of New York

Denzel Washington in Training Day.

Matt Damon in Courage under fire, Bourn and The Informant

Kevin Spacey in Life of David Gayle. (better than Usual Suspect’s Keyser Soze)

Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven and True Crime (True Crime is relatively unknown Eastwood flick but a great one with Isaiah Washington)

Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt

Sean Penn in Mystic River.

Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade and One False move

Casey Affleck in The Killer inside me and The Assassination of Jesse James

Female:

Laura Linney in Life of David Gayle.

Meryl Streep in The Iron lady.

Rachel McAdams in The Lucky Ones.

Frances McDormand in Fargo.

I usually don’t like the hyped Bollywood movie with big actors as they are usually the same i.e in Salman Khan movies there is no more than him beating 50 dudes with his shirt off and in SRK movies it is same thing over and over i.e him playing a romantic college dude even if he is in him mid 40’s. I like Amir Khan though and his movie taare zameen par was his best. I don’t know why many independent and low budget movies in Bollywood don’t get much success as there are many good one like mumbai meri jaan & life in a metro. Also, I liked Saif Ali Khan in Ek Hasina Thi.

About Nepali movies, the last one I watched was Chino when I was on 5th grade so can’t comment on it.

I hear you Stiffler. Maybe I was a little too critical about Haribansha. And the point you put forth reminded me of the tapes my grandfather used to play when I was a little kid. Those tapes were from a theatrical comedy show 'Rasaranga'. Yes, they were funny but then they were funny to me as a child because for one I couldn't understand what they meant and for two there weren't any other comedians present during that period.

But then as I was in my middle school Haribansha and Madan Krishna started appearing on TV and eventually in movies. That was when I became a little smarter and could discern between a good acting and the one that is superfluous. Did I laugh when I watched '216777'? Of course. Was I grim seeing that seral about AIDS? Definitely. But I wouldn't consider myself being 'moved' by their acting. Nepal tv was at its infancy. And at that era everything played there was supposed to be good cos we didn't really have any choice.

Quite honestly, I would have still admired Haribansha and MadanKrishna if they only stuck to radio shows or theaters. Cinema demands a lot more, both from the audience, and the director, and I am not sure if they fitted in aptly. Also, both of them later became 'do it all' actors. They were involved in singing, fighting, serious roles (which was clearly not there forte) which made me wonder about their exclusivity.

There is little doubt that we all  consider Haribansha as the best actor in Nepalese cinema,  But whether I like his acting or not is an entirely different question.

One person in this entire thread has some clue about what an ART is and what an ACTING is. The rest are just using a benchmark of entertainment to judge the level of acting or actors. Just becasue you like the movie does not mean that the acting in the movie is great. Many Indian and Nepali audiences do not even know what acting is and what it means. If they get enough "Masala" that they want they are ready to call it a good acting/actor already.

When i see people listing crappy movies and the actors as their favorites it is quite amzaing. I am actually embarrased to talk about cheesy hindi or nepai or hollywood movies. Many women consider salman khan a good actor just because they find him attactive and many men think aishwarya is a good actress becasue they find her attractive.

In the same way, i respect Haribansa a lot for his activisim and his contributions to Nepali comedy and entertainment but i know Haribansa is not a great actor. He is definetely better than the ones who sold thier father 4 Ana Land to become a Hero but still not good enough to be known as an actor. The entire country of India does not even have 10 people who can really act so it is not realistic to have too much of expectation for Nepali actors. I think Shanti maskey or Shushila Rayamajhi are far better actresses than Hari Bansa.

Sometimes a director also has a lot do with how the actors act in thier movies. A good director can always get an actor to act certain way. In nepal, most of the directors are like ( Kaam kehi napayera bau ko moola bari bechera film direction garne haru). We cannot expect much from those trashy directors. None of those directors have any concept of art. They just want to sleep with the actress and make crappy movies.

I have never considered Amitabh as a good actor regardless of him being a good entertainer. Sometimes directors can make a difference in the performance of their actors. Watch the movie SAUDAGAR, an old Amitabh Bachhan movei. Its availabe in you tube. Amitabh has done an excellent acting in that movie. Not as good at Nutan but very good compared to how he has acted since that movie.

Adding more to what Jonny already did. Also, we all have agreed movies and actors are all about our own personal choices and I am glad we aren't bickering as we always do :) I am listing few movies of some notable actors other than their great ones, few of my favorites.

1. Sean Penn - I liked him better in Milk than in Mystic River. Also not even close to his acting skills in present days, his role in 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' was also very funny. Also, Dead man walking made me hate him.

2. I am glad Raju mentioned Daniel Day Lewis - I have been an ardent fan of him since 'My left foot'

3. Kevin Costner in 'Dances with the wolves'

4. Kevin Spacey's  most underrated movie 'The Shrink'

5. Jamie Lee Curtis in 'The Fish called Wanda'

6. Other than 'Rain Man' and 'Midnight Cowboy' and 'The Graduate' I also liked Hoffman in 'Last chance Harvey'

7. Has anyone seen Coen brother's Miller's Crossing?

8. Billy Bob Thorton in 'The man who wasn't there' and 'Monster's ball'

9. Michael Douglas in 'Romancing the stone' and 'Wall Street' (old version).

10. Jack Nicholson in 'As good as it gets'

11. Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless mind - Carrey and Winslet

12. Being John Malkovich - John Cusack and John Malkovich

13. The dude Jeff Bridges in 'Big Lebowski'

14. Julia Roberts in 'Notting Hill'

15. Hugh Grant in 'Four Weddings and a funeral'

16. Ewan McGregor in 'The Big Fish' and 'Trainspotting'

17. Bob Duvall in 'The secondhand Lions' and 'Open range'

18. Natalie Portman in 'The Garden State'

19. De Niro  and Robin Williams in 'Awakenings'

20. Felicity Huffman in 'Transamerica'

21. KK Mennon - Gulal

22. I wish he retained doing such thriller but he clearly didn't Neil Nitin Mukesh in 'Johnny Gaddar'

23. Juliet Binoche in 'Chocolat'

24. Kate Hudson in 'Almost Famous'

25. Christian Bale and Russell Crowe in '3:10 to Yuma'

26. Denzel Washington in 'The Book of Eli'

27. Jen Lawrence in 'Winter's Bone'

28. An independent movie called ' Frozen River '

29. Ken Watanabe in 'Letters from Iwo Zima'

I went overboard, I know.....SORRY! :)

When I see somebody judge others judgement, like above thread, it makes me cringe.

Art is art, not science. This very definition makes it subjective. What defines a good artist and what makes one artist bad is very subjective and rather complicated.

Just because somebody is acting all natural, doesn't make him/her an actor. Performing is one part of acting, but you have to understand the difference. Daniel Day Lewis is considered a top-echelon artist. Look at his last memorable movie: There will be blood; a brilliant performance piece. Some critics argued, though, that it wasn't natural. He still is a great actor of our time. In Bollywood, you either love or hate Nana Patekar; he could be over the top - over acting Or just right for some. He is a great performer, now is he is a good actor? Most will say yes, some hard critics might disagree.

Hari Vansha dai, in that terms, is a great performer. I agree his acting is not as deep as others mentioned above but this is what the situation required. Is Heath Ledger a great actor? If you think of The Dark Night or the Broke Back Mountain then you will agree, if you think of other chick flicks he acted in then you might argue otherwise. He was doing his job according to what it demanded. My point thus is that you have to see things in context. Hari Vansha dai was good because he was more than apt for what he was catering.

Stiffler,

I put Haribansa at the same level as Amitabh bachhan, Ashok Kumar, Madan Das Shrestha, he is an okay actor and a great person but not a great actor. No one in Nepali movie industry are natural great actors.

I have lots of respect for MAHA Jodi but i know they are not natural actors.

 Hollywood :

Matt Damon (Saving Private Ryan, Bourne Series, The Talented Mr. Ripley)

Leonardo DiCaprio (Basketball Diaries, The Departed, Blood Diamond, Catch me if you can)  - I can't think of any bad movies by this guy.

Kevin Spacey (The life of David Gale, The Usual suspects, se7en, American Beauty)

Denzel Washington (The Bone Collector, Training Day, Man on Fire, American Gangster)

Edward Norton (American History X, The Illusionist)

Russell Crowe (Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, A Beautiful Mind)

Tom Hanks (The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump)

Michael Caine (The Prestige, Batman 1,2)

Al Pacino (Carlito's Way, Scarface, Heat, The Godfather II)

Bollywood :

Naseruddin Shah (most talented Indian actor, imo), Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgan

I absolutely can't stand Shahrukh Khan. He's got to be the most overrated actor, ever.

For actresses, Jodie Foster, Keira Knightley, Meryl Streep.

Among Kollywood Actresses, I love Tripti Bhatnagar (KC?). I've never watched any of her movies but my word, she is a babe, isn't she?!

SAP
I think that's a fair statement. Also, saying Hari Bansha wasn't the greatest actor is not a disrespect to him. I think we can all agree that he is one of our brightest star.

I don't watch much TV.  It has been ages since I last went to a movie theater.  So, for me, NETFLIX jindaabad!!

Movies from my 2012 activity list in Netflix that I rated 4 stars or above:
  • Enter Nowhere
  • Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
  • Nine Queens
  • Midnight in Paris
  • Rise of the Planet of Apes
  • Delhi Belly
  • Jaane tu ya jaane na
  • Well done abba
Loot was the only Nepali movie I have watched so far this year.  Unfortunately, it was terrible.

TV series from my 2010 - 2012 activity list in Netflix that I rated 4 stars or above:
  • Battlestar Gallactica
  • Dr. Who (post 2005)
  • Foyle's War (5 stars)
  • White Chapel: season 1
  • Big Love
  • The Pacific
  • Tudors
  • Sherlock: season 1
  • MI-5
  • Doc Martin (5 stars)
  • Lost  (5 stars) - one season in the middle was not that good, I would rate it 3.5 stars.
  • Downton Abbey: Season 1
  • Weeds
  • Luther
  • Avaatar the last airbender: animated series
  • The Winds of War
  • 3rd Rock from the sun
  • That 70's show - the last season was a let down
  • Spartacus
  • The IT Crowd
  • 24
  • Firefly
  • Jericho
  • Coupling - British version
  • Wire in the Blood
  • Dexter
As you can see, I am a big British TV buff.

@bairagikanchho, Good choice of movies. Joseph Gordon was brilliant in '500 Days of Summer'.

He should have won this years Oscar for '50/50', but he was not even nominated. Same for Charile Theron in 'Young Adult'.
I think its not only the acting but being suitable for the roles actor/actress play in the movie. For instance, whenever I think of Jim Morrison Val Kilmer's image comes in my mind he was so perfect for that role.
