Hello Folks,

I am looking to buy a GPS for travel purposes and I am overwhelmed by the choices available. All I am looking for is a basic device with voice navigation and street by street view. I really dont care for bluetooth and blah blah. Your recommendations would be invaluable. I did look for older sajha posts related to GPS but all of them were a bit old and I am sure there are newer devices in the market as compared to 2 years back. Thanks again for reading this and your inputs.

I have been using garmin nuvi 250 for past 4 years no problems. Find one with free lifetime traffic updates and you will be all set. Dont spend more than 100 bucks. There are lots of deals online.

BTW a tip for Garmin owners, the male voice has better speech than the female voice. Male voice pronounces street names a bit naturally.

My Garmin keeps reminding me that I need to update their software for latest maps, I am sure, for some fee.  I got the device two or three years ago.  I wonder if the roads have changed a lot since then.  What do you think?

I agree with vyrus. I don't see any reason why you would need a separate GPS when your phone can do that for you and better.

I would say garmin are the best, had 250 series and very easy to use and straight forward. Make sure it atleast has voice directions, street names are not necessary in my opionion just costs more. But map updates are expensive, but when you are travelling you should be good for atleast 4-5 years as its mostly highways, just local point of interest business gets messed up as they close and open frequently.

Android phones are nice as it is synced with google and free real time map updates, but i found the gps reception is very unreliable, and no they are not free lol because arent they charging you like 30 bucks a month for data service and the price of phone? it is nice to have though. But yeah definately get garmin

Google Navigation (Android) is good enough. But takes lots of data make sure to get Unlimited Web if you plan to use as GPS. Signal seems fine to me. I use it sometime works quite well.

I love the GPS of my HTC EVO 4G. UNlimited Everything is compulsory on this phone. But it has no real time update. Is there any GPS that shows the traffic, road blockade, alternate routes...?
