Hello All,

Just wanted to hear from Sajhaites about pros and cons of getting into business school.

Background: Science (chemistry/biology)

I want to explore opportunities with business degree, with my background which degree would be more appropriate
MBA General
Masters in Accounting
Masters in Finance
Others

In terms job prospect, what major is easier to find jobs? I appreciate suggestions from those with business degrees and have real world experiences.

Thanks,

Since you are from biology/chemistry background, I recommend you start with MBA General and take some core business courses relating to financial and management accounting along with human resource, corporate finance, and economics courses. Accounting and Finance are more technical field and it is lot easier to find jobs with accounting and finance background. Finance and Accounting jobs are also among highest paying jobs. Finance basically is a branch of economics and is lot complex!

If you're already a manager or going to be a manager soon then yes go for mba, otherwise don't hope to land a job after finishing your mba unless you go to one of the top tier mba schools. it's too tough out there for foreigners.

Thank you guys, appreciate your comments and suggestions! I also thought finance and accounting would be little tough without business background. As you all pointed out, MBA seems little easier as schools admit student various fields in their MBA programs. I am not satisfied with my current job and wanted a career change. I would not want to pursue a career if particular major would not have a very good job prospect. Can one get into grad school in accounting or finance without undergraduate degree in business? Does grad school courses are enough to pass or qualify to take CPA or CFA if i were to choose accounting or finance, respectively?

If one doesn't have sound understanding of elements, molecules, steriochemistry etc. then that person will not do good in the biological or chemical field. Similarly, if one doesn't have sound understanding of basic accounting principles, and basic knowledge of economics, then that person will not do good in business school. The foundation is very important. Take your time and rethink. Go to the library and borrow some intermediate level account and finance book. Read it for a week and ask yourself, does it excites you? I have heard that colleges put you in pre-mba courses if you are not from business background. This may increase the length of your MBA program. There are many MBA programs designed for different background student; however, if you want to go for accounting and finance, you need to start from the foundation courses. If not, human resources, marketing, general business are not that technical. If you can become the director of human resources, you make 114K !! This all depends on your self-confidence as well.

cut the crap.. i went from cis to mba finance emphasis in a decent school and had no issues graduating with a 3.8 gpa.. anyone can learn anything , it's not like chemistry or bio where you have to have certain lab experience . accounting/finance has become so easy lately with the internet. what used to take days to prepare statement and research etc can be done within minutes with some fancy accounting software and research are easily done withing minutes using hte internet for finance. mostly in my classes there were cfos, to senior accountants trying to finnally get their mbas and it was worth it for them. there was one ceo from a bank , she said she started her career from mail room and was there to finally get her degree. It works for them. However, when i tried to look for jobs after graduation they either look for 5+ years of cpa or cfa or they tell you 're too qualified to start from an entry level with mba. it's b.s. i did n't really pursue hard cuz i was already making more money then what they were offering cpas few years ago.. around 50 k. get in the IT.. join a consultancy or join some bootcamp if you have energy and money. if you really want to do mba the, do this one :

This is why never take advice you get from Sajha seriously, including this one. The only difference between me and other posters is that I declare it in my name.

Absolutely disagree with Ujl, agree with sidaNepali. While it helps to have some accounting background, you can quickly learn the basics that are needed for MBA, in MBA classes.

Don't give advice based on what you think it is. Advise once you lived it.

Biology major, already a SCIENCE degree so obviously basic math/account no problem, if you interested get MBA degree, do cost benefit analysis it entirely depends on your networks, leadership capability to land in better job, but if you thinking MBA degree like a medical/nursing degree(more likely get job after graduation/ board registration) then double think... I believe all degree are good but success ,its totally depends on you.

Thank you all for your responses, appreciated! I understand that it is not easy to find a job with MBA from average schools, but I was hoping with no need for sponsorship to work, I may be able to land a descent job with MBA degree. Having said that, I agree with you all that finance and accounting seems little tougher without business background.
