Now here’s a place that does not get a lot of reviews in Nepal’s leading publications (as far as I’m concerned they just go for the fancy places, get a free meal and write up some flattery) but deserves it all the more.

Fancy? Definitely not. Okay? Definitely so.

Coffee Station is location at the perfect junction in Kathmandu. Thapathali is the awkward stop in the city where every once in a while we all have to go – either to Norvic or to Bluebirds or to Martin Chautari. It’s awkward because when coming from Patan since you either have to walk in from Kupondole or walk back from Maitighar. Thapathali just happens. Other spots in the valley, like Thamel or Jawalakhel appear, but Thapathali just pops out of nowhere.

Anyway, the only places to eat there are the unsanitary chiya pasals that sell days old samosas fried in weeks old oil outside Norvic (you’d think that a hospital would say no to the mushrooming or such establishments, or at least call for some level of hygiene) or at the overpriced Agan or KFC under Bluebird Mall. Of course there’s Java inside Norvic but how weird do you have to be go to a hospital to meet a friend coffee?

Coffee Station is a not-so-hidden gem. Located right at the corner of the main traffic it’s a perfect meet-up or hang-out spot. Cramped with school kids it feels a bit out of place to be there if you are over 16, but the location is right, the price is right and the service too is al right.

I have to admit the food is nothing to rave about, but neither is it something to complain about. The coffee is not Nescafe which is something to be thankful for when you are paying as little as you are for the cup. The food is not entirely memorable, but the usual list of momos, chowmein and vegetable soup are available.

Coffee Station doesn’t strike me as one those places anyone goes to because the coffee is so rich or the food is so good. It seems to be popular with the young folks because nothing on the menu will break a budget – even a student budget. The place is relatively clean, though not entirely free of obnoxious teenagers, but that’s the price to pay for a cheap and easy meal. And before I forget, they also have a small selection of okay pastry, again, nothing special.

The only two downsides would be that smoking inside is okay-ed by management so you may develop bronchitis, pneumonia and a host of other nasty disease courtesy of the table next-door. Also, no bathroom. You’ll have to use the public one located outside the café, down the road and inside a whole other building. Other than that, it’s not bad at all.

Since Valley Foodie can’t cook and hates to clean up after creating havoc in the kitchen while frying  eggs in place of a “real meal” the only option she has is to explore and to eat. You may think such an individual could not provide solid food reviews, but really, it’s the opposite (because she watches Master Chef). Anyway, who says the way to a man’s stomach alone is through food?
