Russia faced the largest antigovernment demonstrations in a decade as thousands of Russians took to the street in cities across the country to protest against election fraud. The Russian government has dismissed the protests as instigated by the United States to undermine Putin's ruling party's legitimacy in the recent parliamentary elections.
The ruling United Russia party of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin retained a majority in the December 4 vote but many Russians suspect a widespread fraud.
Saturday's rally in Moscow was the biggest in years and also attracted some of the capital's wealthy and cultural elite. The police put the total figure at 25,000 but some organizers believe that as many as 100,000 attended the rally to show their discontent against Putin's ruling party.
Opposition parties have vowed to keep up the pressure with more protests. Putin plans to run for the Presidential elections scheduled for March and is expected to win.
