I have had applied the work permit on economic hardship and got it approved each time that I applied, when I was in the college. It's not that hard. You may need the following:
-Letter from your primary sponsor, stating why they are not able to send you the promised amount (reasons might be several: due to an illness in the family due to any incurable disease (need a strong proof from the Govt. office, if so), sudden death of the sponsor (need a strong proof from the Govt. office, if so), loss in business due to political reasons, etc.)
-Letter from you admitting the fact that your primary sponsor is no longer in a position to help you, and request for the EAD card to USCIS.
-I-20 signed by ur intl. adm. office
-Any supporting documents that will strengthen your case.
Don't leave a stone unturned, coz remember that u're spending $340 for the application. Either you get it or u lose it, no refunds!!
Good Luck!
