Hi everybody,

One of my partition on  hard drive has 30 GB space and currently I have only 18.7 GB files on my that partition. When i see the free space it only shows me 515 MB free. What is the problem. Where is the rest of the space lost? How can i get my space back(30-18.7 = 21.3 GB)??

Any Help will be appreciated!!

P.S :

  • The prolem is on the C drive(NTFS) where Windows Vista is installed.

  • I performed disk clean up, disk fragementation and also removed all the temporary files, but nothing worked.

  • When i See Disk Management it displays as below picture(i don't know how that 78 MB come from)

Depending on how much space has already been used, Vista reserves some more space for Hibernation and Standyby mode and registry related tasks. I am not sure about how much space it reserves for that, but this could be one of the reason why you are seeing only 515 MB free space. How to get it back, I am not sure about that.

The snapshot above does not show whole picture. Could you post another snapshot. Right click on the C: in the above disk management window, and click on Properties. Post the snapshot of 'Geneal' tab. If there is any quota allocated, post the snapshot of 'Quota' tab as well.

The 78 MB is for EISA configuration, as you can see from picture above. It is used for utility. Refer to:

My 21.3 GB is lost. Will Hibernation and StandBy files takes that much of space? do u know how can i delete those registry files? Also how to delete files regarding page fault? I have vista on another machine but it works OK with the disk space.
I am really annoyed by this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have included some snapshot of following:
  1. Right click on C dive at disk mgmt
  2. General tab from property
  3. Propery window for the size of my files at C drive
Now it shows 1.09 free because i delted some files.

Check your recycle bin. I once had a bin full of 6gbs deleted files.

Hello stolen thoughts, no space is "lost" in your hard drive. You have 1GB of free space while 28GB of used space, that makes total of 29GB of your hard disk capacity. So, what is lost??

You'll only remove temporary files in certain location manually. To delete unwanted files completely, use ccleaner.
Hibernation does not take "Free space" from your hard disk separately. While it goes to hibernation, it uses your hard disk space to save data temporarily.

I think you're talking about "System Restore" space, which is allocated certain space of hard disk, but is is always a "Used space".

Total Capacity of a hard disk = "Free space" + "Used space" , is true in every case.

Recycle bin is counted as "Used space". It is merely a separate folder. Unless you remove files from recycle bin, it is never deleted.

hey 11thdimension,
you can see I have 18.7 GB files on my C drive(this is shown when i select all files and view the property)
And when i go to property of C drive and see the size it shows me 28.1 GB used. SO where is my other space(28.1 - 18.7 ==> 9.4 GB ) lost??
did u get my problem? I  have posted the pictures above to make it clear.

Try disk cleanup in the C drive properties windows.

Stolen thoughts, the problem is that looking at C: drive properties(which is telling you 28 GB used and 1 GB free) is different than selecting all files/folders inside C:\ drive and looking at the combined property of those because there are so many hidden things that do not show up when you explore C:\ drive. Read the article below, it should explain that in a bit detail.
Disk Space Discrepancy
According to that article, the C: drive properties gives you the accurate reading not selecting C:\ drive folders and checking their properties. So you might actually have only 1 GB space left. Might wanna start getting rid of some of the files.
