Peace process in Nepal remains fragile: Moon

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has said the peace process in Nepal “remains
a fragile one,” which will continue to need United Nations assistance.

In a new report he presented before the Security Council on Thursday,
Secretary-General Moon has said that the “critical agreements” on the
reintegration of former Maoist combatants still remains to be implemented and
expressed his disappointment at having to “report so little progress” regarding
the issues most relevant to the mandate of UNMIN, the special political mission
tasked with helping advance the peace process in Nepal.

“It is particularly regrettable that the political parties have to date
failed
to reach agreement regarding the special committee to supervise,
integrate and rehabilitate the Maoist army personnel so that it can begin its
important work,” he states in the report which is due to be released Friday.

In the report Moon proposes an extension of the UN presence in Nepal, albeit
at a slightly reduced capacity. nepalnews.com Jan 09
